Grimsby And Cleethorpes Model Engineering Society - GCMES We are a model engineering society founded in 1935, based on the Waltham Windmill site in Waltham, Grimsby. There are no paid members of staff.

We are a charitable organisation dedicated to promoting engineering through the construction and operation of model engineering projects. The Grimsby and Cleethorpes Model Engineering Society is based on the Waltham Windmill Site in Waltham, Grimsby. We have a railway catering for locomotives in 31/2'' 5'' and 71/4'' gauge around an inner circle, and 5'' and 71/4'' gauge around the entire track. T

he track is fully operated by members of the society. We rely purely on donations, train rides and membership fees to keep the society going. We have workshop facilities of which are for the use of the members. The signalling system is operated from the signal box. the Point system is pneumatically operated. We have a clubhouse which is used for the monthly meeting and various events. For any other details please feel free to email or message me.

Tomorrow (Wednesday 19th Aug) we will be running trains from 12 noon in support of the Parish Council's Nunnys Farm event. https://www.walthamparishcouncil.gov.uk/parish-events/nunny-farm (note Nunnys Farm 2-4pm)
Come along to see and pet the animals, have an ice cream at Bensleys plus have a ride on the train. Fares will be the normal £2.00 per person.

With rain over the last two nights and further rain forecast for tonight (Tuesday) we feel we can run steam trains for this event. We have 4 different locos on the roster so plenty of choice!

Waltham Miniature Railway - IMPORTANT UPDATE
Due to the current dry conditions and in line with Government advice regarding the increased risk of wildfires, we will not be operating steam trains this Sunday. We will be operating our normal service with electric powered locos only.
We will keep the situation under review and hope to have steam engines running again as soon as conditions permit.
In the meantime come along for a SUPER ELECTRIC SUNDAY!

This week we feature a 7 1/4" gauge model of No. 70014 Iron Duke was a British Railways Standard Class 7 'Britannia' 4-6-2 Pacific steam locomotive built in 1951. It famously hauled prestigious express trains like the Golden Arrow which ran from London Victoria to Dover before its withdrawal from service in December 1967.

This week we feature another Narrow Gauge Loco built by Hunslet.
"Blanche" is a larger "Port class" that transported the slate from the quarries in North Wales to the coast to be loaded into ships for onward transport all over the world. The port class were distinctive in that the coupling rods that linked the driving wheels were outside of the connecting rods that joined onto the piston rods. The cylinders being placed higher than usual to clear the cranks. The model here is 1/4 full size but still a powerful loco.

This week we feature "Wallis" a 0-4-0 Saddle tank loco with tender. The originals were built by Hunslet of Leeds and many were used for tranporting Slate from the Quarries of North Wales. A number have survived into preservation and can be seen working on a number of North Wales Narrow Gauge railways and elsewhere.

This week's featured loco is Holmside a 0-6-0 Saddle Tank in NCB (National Coal Board) Livery. The original loco was built in 1901 by Chapman and Furneaux in Gateshead. It originally worked for the National Coal Board between Craghead and Morrison B***y Collieries in County Durham until it was scrapped in 1962 It was immortalized in 1977 by designer Martin Evans, who published a popular 7 1/4-inch gauge build series in Model Engineer magazine.
