From Kenya's highlands to the edge of Lake Tanganyika.

We climb out of Nairobi's runway 06, leaving the savannah capital behind. The Great Rift Valley stretches beneath us—a dramatic reminder of the ancient forces shaping this continent. Then, as we track west, Lake Victoria appears on the horizon, a freshwater sea sprawling across three countries.

We cross the lake. Then the border. Then the mountains rise again.

We climb out of Kilimanjaro with the mountain still filling the rearview mirrors. But this time, instead of heading deeper into the savannah, we turn east—toward the coast, toward the Indian Ocean, toward the ancient trade winds that have called explorers here for centuries.

The landscape softens. The air smells like salt long before we see the water. And then, there it is—the Kenyan coastline, turquoise and gold.

We lift off from Entebbe, climbing out over Lake Victoria one last time before turning south. The lush Ugandan hills give way to Tanzania's vast savannahs—and then, piercing the clouds on the horizon, Kili appears.

We leave Juba behind and track south along the White Nile, watching the landscape green and swell beneath us. The dry plains of South Sudan give way to Uganda's rolling hills—and then, like a sudden inland sea, Lake Victoria appears on the horizon.

Not the Nile. Not the capital. This time, we head west.

We leave Khartoum behind and track west across Sudan—past the dry scrublands of Kordofan, over the scattered hills of Darfur, and down to a runway carved out of a remote desert town.

ILS approach in the middle of nowhere

The landscape is harsh. The isolation is real. But that's exactly why this leg matters.

This leg is not for the faint of heart.
We're leaving Egypt behind and tracking south over seemingly endless, parched wilderness—inhospitable, unforgiving, and absolutely mesmerizing.

But the destination makes it worthwhile.

🛬 Khartoum – where the White Nile (from Lake Victoria) meets the Blue Nile (from Ethiopia). Together, they form the great River Nile that flows north to Egypt.

🌊 Lake Victoria will come later in our journey. For now? We've earned an evening in Khartoum after a grueling but unforgettable flight.
