In today’s rapidly changing financial and political landscape, workers are facing growing uncertainty through rising living costs, job insecurity and shifting government policies.
As businesses adapt to economic pressures, employees can often be left with less stability, fewer protections, and reduced bargaining power. Being part of a union gives workers a stronger collective voice to negotiate fair pay, secure working conditions, and protection of rights, helping to ensure that employees are not left vulnerable during periods of economic and political change.
Unison is led by our 1.3 million members and it is strongest when members are active, engaged, and involved. Unison is more than just representation when problems arise — it is a collective voice that works to improve workplaces, protect jobs, support colleagues, and campaign for better conditions for everyone.
As Branch Secretary, I am writing to ask if you have ever considered, and if not to now consider, becoming more active as a member within Unison and specifically within your branch here in North East Lincolnshire Local Government Branch. https://www.unison.org.uk/get-involved/
We are encouraging members to become more active within both Unison nationally and our local branch. There are many ways to get involved, whether that means:
- Attending branch meetings
- Sharing workplace issues and ideas https://www.unison.org.uk/get-involved/in-your-workplace/
- Supporting campaigns and events
- Helping recruit new members
- Taking part in consultations and ballots
- Participating in and/or forming a Self Organsied Group (SOG)
- Becoming a workplace contact or steward https://www.unison.org.uk/get-involved/in-your-workplace/help-your-branch/
We are also currently looking for members who may be interested in taking on branch roles, including:
- Assistant Treasurer
- Membership Officer
- Black Members Officer
- Young Members Officer
- Branch Education Coordinator
- Branch Lifelong Learning Coordinator
- Branch International Relations Officer
- Retired Members Officer
- Environmental Officer
These are important roles within the branch and a great opportunity to contribute, develop new skills, and help support fellow members. Full support and guidance will be available for anyone interested and more information can be found at Official branch roles - UNISON National
Your experience, ideas, and participation can make a real difference. The more active our membership is, the stronger our voice becomes when negotiating with employers and campaigning on issues that matter to staff.
Getting involved does not have to require a large time commitment, and every contribution helps strengthen our union.
If you would like to know more about the available roles or other opportunities to get involved, please contact the branch team. We would be delighted to hear from you.
Together, we can build a stronger and more effective union.
In solidarity,
Every member of UNISON belongs to a branch. Why not get active by going along to a branch event to meet other UNISON members and find out what the branch is doing? You’ll be made very welcome and it’s a great chance to find out more about what the union is doing for you.
