Inverclyde Ukrainian Club SCIO is bringing to Greenock a unique work of Ukrainian folk art listed in the Guinness World Records — the Unity Rushnyk of Ukraine.
Created by Ukrainians across the world and assembled into a single 270-metre-long embroidered полотно, the Unity Rushnyk has already travelled through many countries and continues its journey, gradually growing with new embroidered fragments contributed by Ukrainian communities worldwide. Preserving a living thread that connects Ukrainians across continents and generations, it stands as a symbol of unity, memory, and cultural heritage.

This unique artefact will be in Greenock for one day only and will be on display on Monday 6 July from 12:00 to 20:00 during the Ukrainian-Scottish cultural event Crowned by Kupala:
Mirrored in Beltane.

Further details about the programme can be found in the press release published in our previous post.

We look forward to welcoming you.

CROWNED BY KUPALA:
MIRRORED IN BELTANE
Sometimes the deepest cultural discoveries happen when we unexpectedly recognise something of ourselves in the traditions of another people.

A Ukrainian–Scottish Cultural Day
Free Entry

Location: Greenock Ocean Terminal Visitor Centre, Greenock, Scotland
Date: Monday, 6 July
Doors open from 12:00 noon

Crowned by Kupala: Mirrored in Beltane is a Ukrainian–Scottish cultural day bringing together two ancient seasonal traditions through contemporary art, textile heritage, music and participatory performance. The project explores cultural memory, seasonal cycles and the shared symbolic language embedded in European folk traditions.

From midday, visitors are invited into a living cultural space where Ukrainian artistic heritage meets Scottish seasonal ritual in dialogue rather than contrast.

The day opens at 12:00 noon with an exhibition of batik artworks by students of Mykolaiv Children’s Art School in Ukraine under the guidance of artist and school director Yevheniia Kruchynina. The works explore themes of nature, imagination and resilience, offering insight into the creative development of young artists continuing their education in challenging circumstances.

A central feature of the exhibition is the presentation of the Rushnyk of Unity — a 270-metre embroidered Ukrainian textile of collective memory, created from fragments contributed by Ukrainians across different regions of Ukraine and diaspora communities worldwide. This unique work of cultural collaboration was officially recognised by Guinness World Records on 24 May 2026 and will be presented in Greenock as a symbol of unity, continuity and shared identity.

From 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm, guests are invited to take part in a wreath-making workshop inspired by seasonal traditions associated with Kupala and Beltane. Accompanied by live music, this participatory experience reflects the enduring relationship between people, nature and ritual across cultures.

At 6:00 pm, the programme continues with a Kupala performance featuring traditional Ukrainian songs, national costumes and wreath symbolism. Through music and movement, the performance evokes the atmosphere of midsummer traditions rooted in ancient practices honouring water, fire, light and community.

The day concludes with a symbolic wreath-floating ceremony on the River Clyde — a poetic gesture of transition, remembrance and renewal — followed by an informal reception for conversation and cultural exchange.

This non-profit cultural initiative also includes a fundraising appeal in support of Mykolaiv Children’s Art School in Ukraine, with donations directed towards essential art materials for students continuing their education in a region affected by war.

Crowned by Kupala: Mirrored in Beltane invites audiences to experience cultural heritage not as something distant or separate, but as a space of recognition, resonance and shared human memory across traditions.

The event is organised by Inverclyde Ukrainian Club SCIO, funded by CVS Inverclyde, and supported by the Ukrainian choir SoloWay.

What a fantastic week it’s been at CVS Inverclyde celebrating Volunteers’ Week 2026 ⭐️

We’ve loved taking the time to recognise and celebrate the volunteers who make such a difference across Inverclyde.

It’s been inspiring to see the many ways organisations across Inverclyde have shown appreciation for their volunteers.

Look out for our blog post tomorrow, where we’ll share more highlights and reflections from the week.

National Volunteers’ Week is a wonderful opportunity to say thank you to the people who make Inverclyde Ukrainian Club SCIO alive, growing, and stronger with every passing month.

Our first official year has shown what a community can achieve when it is united by shared values, mutual support, and a genuine desire to help others. We have held dozens of meetings, workshops, cultural events, and family initiatives. And all of this exists only thanks to our volunteers — people who come after work, in between responsibilities, sometimes with children in their arms, sometimes tired, but always showing up.

Special thanks go to Yuliia Chaika, whose talent and energy have become an essential part of the "Breaking Bread" project and the development of the club’s confectionery direction. Her contribution helped turn this initiative into our first successful pilot project, bringing people together and showing the potential of new cultural initiatives such as the "Easter Bread Festival".

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the volunteer team of the “My Teacher” art exhibition at Ocean Terminal — our first major cultural event of the year. It demonstrated the strength of a team that can work calmly, collaboratively, and with trust.

A special thank you to our catering team — Оксана Чаплигіна, Halyna Syroid, Леся Біленко , Olena Chupryna, Людмила Кошкіна, Maria Tsybulska, Natalia Mykhailivska, and Yuliia Chaika , Софія Чаплигіна — for creating an atmosphere of warmth and hospitality at every event.

We are grateful to our musicians — Elena Kostievich and Анастасия Белимготова— for the live musical presence that makes our cultural events truly special.

We also thank our partners: the Ukrainian choir Solo Way, led by Bozhena Yakymenko, for cultural collaboration and support; and Olha Reshetova for her author-led workshops, initiative, and meaningful contribution to the development of our projects.

A sincere thank you to Іванна Склярова and Kateryna Udovenko, our photographers and videographers, for preserving the visual story of the club and building its living archive.

We are grateful to our youth volunteer team — Mila and Denys Rudenko, Софія Чаплигіна, Roman Chaika, Dana Tsybulska, Karolina Petrenko, and Karina Kulachok — for their readiness to get involved and support the club’s initiatives.

Special appreciation goes to our young mothers — Яна Петренко, Marina Antipatrova, and their families — for participating in the life of the club despite the demands of family and childcare.

Thank you to our male volunteer team — Mykhailo Bilenko, Roman Chaika, Богдан Любінець, Vadym Mazurov, Mykhailo Bosei, and Maksym Tsybulskyi — for your reliability and constant support.

Today we also extend our gratitude to every volunteer who has been with us this year, as well as those who stood at the origins of the club’s creation: Denys and Viktoriia Ro, Nataliia and Svitlana Stosha, Iryna Khlypavka, Liudmyla and Yevhen Fomenko Iren Polen, Natallia Voronzova, Светлана Остапенко, Al’ona Ostapenko — and everyone who supported us at events, in organisation, in welcoming guests, and in creating the atmosphere of a shared home we are building together.

And finally, our sincere thanks to our Trustees - Kathryn Bell, Yana Kulachok, Halyna Syroid, Ross Ahlfeld, Rhys McCole, Kenny Marshall, Willie Sutherland and especially to Jim Strachan and Project Coordinator Marina Gorbunova for strategic development, continued support, partnerships, work with funding and grant programmes, and for the daily commitment that has made this first official year of Inverclyde Ukrainian Club a year of growth, achievement, and confident progress.

Thank you to everyone who walks this path with us.

Together we are building not just an organisation, but a community where people support each other, preserve culture, find friends, and build a future.

Dear friends 🌞
Inverclyde Ukrainian Club warmly invites you to join our Live Flower Crowns Workshop, part of the Crafting Meaning project — a series of monthly creative workshops within our Mental Health & Wellbeing programme.

Inspired by nature and the beginning of summer, this workshop offers a gentle and creative opportunity to work with flowers, textures, and natural forms. You will create your own beautiful fresh flower crown using seasonal materials such as gypsophila, eucalyptus, eryngium, and delicate dried grasses.

Your finished crown can be worn as a celebration of summer, used for a photoshoot, or simply enjoyed as a beautiful handmade creation. As the flowers dry, they retain much of their shape and colour, allowing the crown to become a delicate piece of natural decoration for your home throughout the season.

The workshop will be led by invited artisan Olha Reshetova, a Ukrainian artist working across a variety of creative techniques, with a particular passion for floral design and natural materials.

Places are limited, so please book only if you are able to attend.

Inverclyde Ukrainian Club warmly invites you to join our

Seed Bead Puffin Charm Workshop,

held as part of the Crafting Meaning project — a series of monthly creative workshops within our Mental Health & Wellbeing programme.

During this workshop, you will create your own handmade puffin charm using high-quality Japanese glass seed beads. Puffins are one of Scotland’s most loved seabirds, and this workshop takes place during the season when these beautiful birds can be seen around parts of the Scottish coast and islands.

This beginner-friendly workshop will introduce you to the basics of hand bead weaving, step by step. Using tiny glass seed beads, special beading thread, and an original puffin pattern, you will learn how to build the design row by row and create a small decorative charm that can be worn on a bag or displayed at home.

The workshop will be led by invited artisan Olha Reshetova, a Ukrainian artist working across different creative techniques, with a particular passion for handmade beaded jewellery.

All materials will be provided. This workshop is part of a community arts programme, supported through grant funding, and the £5 contribution helps cover high-quality materials.

Places are limited, so please book only if you are able to attend.

For half a year now, the Ukrainian community of Inverclyde has been living in one of the oldest houses in Greenock — caring for it gently and gradually filling it with life.

Day by day, the house comes alive, and we come alive with it. We fill it with children’s voices, music, laughter, and sometimes tears. It is here that our gatherings take place — and where a sense of a home is born.

It feels as though it has welcomed us with the same warmth with which we have embraced it. For us, it has become our first home in Inverclyde.

We are deeply grateful to Ross Ahlfeld, Inverclyde Community Development Trust, and Joao Goncalves, The National Lottery Community Fund for their support, thanks to which this story continues.

Very recently, we were granted the lease of the upper floor of the house. Today we began preparing it for a new chapter, and ahead of us are new dreams: a library, the aroma of fresh coffee for our guests, books, warm conversations, and an atmospheric space within the old courtyard.

This is how it looks today.
And this is how our tomorrow is quietly taking shape.
