The clinical, psychological intervention of Play Therapy is used in support of children who need to process complex trauma, grief, emotional difficulties and other early childhood experiences, unlike other play roles, such as informal therapeutic play workers, play specialists, childcare workers or play workers.

In the UK there can be a shortfall in understanding there is a great difference within these roles. With this in mind BAPT continues to build awareness of the distinctions between each role, showing the public that in the UK the distinction lies in the areas of clinical depth, training, professional regulation, and the goals of the intervention.

Encouraging parents, teachers and professionals to explore a person or businesses credentials before engaging and employing a Play Therapist who will be qualified to an MA ot MSc level and registered to an appropriate body, such as BAPT or PTUK.

A sad loss to the Play Therapy community throughout the world today.
We all learned so much from Dr Landreth and from his classic work- The Art of The Relationship💔

Dr. Garry Landreth’s influence has been deeply woven into the development of play therapy training within BAPT. His pioneering child-centred approach, articulated through his landmark work Play Therapy: The Art of the Relationship, has shaped the learning and practice of generations of play therapists.

Through his teaching, writing, and unwavering belief in the therapeutic power of the relationship, Dr. Landreth helped establish many of the core principles that continue to underpin BAPT-accredited training programmes and inspire practitioners across the UK and beyond.

Every child deserves to feel accepted, valued and safe to be themselves.

For children and young people who are exploring their identity, questioning where they fit in, or navigating experiences of difference, the world can sometimes feel confusing or overwhelming. Concerns about being judged, misunderstood or excluded can have a significant impact on emotional wellbeing.

Play therapy provides a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space where children can express themselves in the way that feels most comfortable for them. Through play, creativity and therapeutic relationships, children can explore their thoughts, feelings and experiences without pressure to find the right words.

At the heart of play therapy is acceptance. Children are supported to develop self-understanding, confidence and a positive sense of self, helping them to feel seen, heard and valued for who they are.

This Pride Week, we celebrate diversity and recognise the importance of creating spaces where every child can belong.

Play Therapy is no quick fix and the trained experienced play therapist will work alongside the young person with empathy, congruence and unconditional positive regard to help them overcome difficulty and become autonomous in their own time and at their own pace.
Our Play Therapists are qualified professionals trained to the highest standard registered by BAPT, PTUK and the professional standards authority and 2 of our therapists are Autplay trained to work with children and young people affected by autism....

Emotionally Based School Avoidance is not simply a child refusing to attend school.

For many children, school attendance becomes difficult because being in school triggers significant emotional distress. This may be linked to anxiety, social difficulties, friendship challenges, bullying, academic pressures, neurodivergence, unmet needs or experiences that leave a child feeling overwhelmed or unsafe.

Children experiencing emotionally based school avoidance often want to attend school but find that their anxiety becomes too great to manage. This can lead to physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach aches, nausea or panic, particularly on school mornings.

Play therapy can help children explore the worries and experiences that may be contributing to their distress. Because children naturally communicate through play, therapy allows them to express thoughts and feelings that may be difficult to articulate verbally.

By building emotional understanding, resilience and a sense of safety, play therapy can help children and families better understand what lies beneath the school avoidance and identify supportive ways forward.

Play Therapists work with children affected by selective mutism. We are highly skilled and specialist trained to work in many traumatic and anxious situations with children and young people who cannot find the words to articulate how they feel.
Through symbolic play and skilled attunement we use the core conditions we are trained in to help the troubled young person lessen anxiety, self regulate and become autonomous....

Some children appear confident and chatty at home but struggle to speak in other environments such as school, clubs or social situations.

Selective mutism is an anxiety-based difficulty rather than a refusal to speak. Children with selective mutism want to communicate but can become so overwhelmed by anxiety that speaking feels impossible in certain situations.

Other children may experience communication difficulties linked to confidence, developmental differences, neurodivergence, speech and language needs or challenging life experiences.

Play therapy can provide a safe and pressure-free environment where children are not expected to communicate in a particular way. Through play, art, movement, storytelling and the therapeutic relationship, children can express themselves without relying solely on words.

As trust develops, children often become more confident in sharing their thoughts, feelings and experiences. Therapy focuses on reducing anxiety, building emotional safety and supporting communication in a way that feels manageable for the child.

Every child deserves to have their voice heard, whether that voice is expressed through words, play or creative expression.
