Drain the Rain 🌧️🌿

On a bright and sunny — if rather chilly — first conservation day of spring, a hardworking crew from and rolled up their sleeves for some serious woodland TLC.

Armed with mattocks, forks, spades, saws, and plenty of determination, Sevan, Steph, Breda, Shubham, Purva, Kash, Joe, Fred, and Portia tackled a long list of jobs: unblocking ditches to keep paths dry, clearing a fallen tree, and cutting back overgrown vegetation to make Grove Farm’s walkways welcoming again.

It was a proper workout that ended in muddy shoes and a big win for woodland water flow! 💪🌲

Massive thanks to all our brilliant volunteers for another day of community action and nature care. Together, we’re helping our woodland breathe easier and bloom brighter. ❤️🌿

From sleet to sunshine — and back again — our spring walk this weekend with John Wells was a true celebration of the season’s wild charm! ☀️❄️🌧️

We joined John to explore the woodland’s awakening plants, from the magnificent carpet of wood anemones in full flower to cowslip, native bluebells, and a host of other spring treasures. 🌿💚

Despite the changing skies, the colours and stories of Grove Farm’s wild flora shone bright — reminding us how special this local nature reserve is. 🌼🌳

Thank you to everyone who braved the weather and shared in the beauty (and mud!) of the day. ❤️

Sunshine, cameras, and plenty of teamwork! ☀️🎬

A real pleasure working with , Cathy, Livio, Ed, Siobhan, and Juvielyn — plus Chris and Jigar from Greenford. 💪
This time, we were joined by a film crew from the , who are creating a documentary called Trash Talks for their Film & TV course. Big thanks to Finn, Alex, Alice, Sabrina, Mariia, and Agne for their time and for jumping in to help with some of the heavy lifting too! 🎥

Around Grove Farm, we cleared 42 seriously heavy bags, plus another 35 bags’ worth from a hefty fly tip of old furniture. On the bright side, we found several items with identifiable addresses — here’s hoping council services can track down the source! 🚮

Huge thanks to everyone who showed up and got stuck in — teamwork and sunshine make the perfect combo for tackling litter. 🌍💚

Dam Good Deeds 🦫🌿

On a muddy Saturday morning, members of Friends of Grove Farm and gathered deep in Grove Farm’s woodland to answer a call for help — “Who wants to be a beaver today?” 🪵💦

Channeling their inner eco-engineers, the team reinforced Grove Farm’s leaky dams to slow a stream’s flow, filter the water before it enters the wider network and prevent winter path flooding — all while supporting the woodland’s natural balance. Logs big and small were hauled, balanced, and wedged into place with true beaver spirit! 🦫💪

Once the dam work was done, the group turned their attention to clearing brambles along the Wood Anemone Walk, preparing the area for its spectacular spring bloom. 🌸 Good news — a few early wood anemones are already peeking through! Make sure to join our guided walks this March and April to see them in full flower. 🌼

Friends of Grove Farm wrapped up by removing 41 bags of rubbish (38 from a recent fly-tip) — a huge win for keeping our woodland clean and healthy. 🗑️👏

Big thanks to Sue and Fred for their tireless efforts, and to our Ealing GoodGymers: Ash, Melissa, Thaiza, Kash, Devi, Richard, Harvey, Steph, and Sevan for their muddy hard work and community spirit. 🌳❤️

📸 Winter Weather, Wonderful Shots at Grove Farm 🌿❄️

Rain, mud and magic light – our latest Grove Farm photography session had it all. A couple of us braved the weather and joined photographer to practice our skills, from phone snaps to full camera kits, and turn a wet winter morning into something beautiful.

We played with soft post-rain light for close-ups of mosses and fungi, water shots, and the striking lines of bare winter trees. With just three of us plus Nigel, it felt like a relaxed mini-masterclass out in our favourite North Greenford wild space.

Got your own winter shots of Grove Farm? Tag us so we can see them!

Roses are red, rubbish is gross — teamwork’s the cure for litter woes! 💪🌹

Sunshine, smiles, and plenty of teamwork at our February Litter Pick around Grove Farm and David Lloyd Lane! and stumbled on a humungous fly-tip of clothes, moldy food, nappies… and one very cute plastic duck 🦆.

Luckily, two pieces of ID might help track down our mystery dumper — result! 💪 Huge thanks to Cathy, Livio, Sue, Frederick, Debora, Siobhan, Juvielyn, and Andy for tackling the cleanup. Total amount of rubbish cleared 79 bags and 12 bags of unbaggables

We rounded off with a catch-up at Brokengate Café, on Valentine’s Day.❤️

Big love to everyone helping keep Grove Farm looking its best — every bag cleared makes a difference! 🙌

🌿 Winter Woodland at Grove Farm: Bramble Clearing for Spring Blooms 🌼

A big thank-you to our amazing volunteers from regulars Sue, Fred and Livio as well as Steph, Sevan, Kash, Ash, Thaiza, James and Richard who came together for our January conservation session at Grove Farm! 🌳💪

After a week of grey skies, the sun finally broke through just in time for us to clear brambles from the woodland slope around the anemone trail — making space for spring life to return. Mushrooms dotted around the woodland and the sound of strimmers echoed through the calm morning air as our team got to work! 🍂🔪

Why all the effort?
🌼 Brambles, if left unchecked, can take over the woodland floor and block sunlight
🌼 Clearing them helps our beautiful wood anemones return in March and April
🌼 These delicate white flowers are ancient woodland indicators — and every bit of care counts!

This year’s brambles were much easier to manage. With the slope now cleared, we’re optimistic for a stunning spring carpet of white blooms again soon! 🌸

Join our next session in February to support Grove Farm’s biodiversity and enjoy a peaceful forest-bathing morning in Greenford. 🌿

A Great day with the Grove Farm Crew 🌿💪

Two huge fly-tips were no match for volunteer determination from and during our litter pick! Joe, Ed, Siobhan, Livio, Sue, Fred, and Cathy cleared around 75 bags of rubbish, three of recyclables, ten bulky “unbaggables” and one rogue dumper even left behind a clue... 👀

We wrapped up as usual with lunch at Brokengate Café, followed by a walk through Grove Farm to check out how the ponds were fairing after the recent wet spell. Good news, we have lots of water. Lets hope our amphibian friends make it to the party in time.

Days like this remind us how much community spirit can achieve. 💚 Want to help keep this nature reserve thriving? Join the next Friends of Grove Farm session for good company, fresh air, and a real sense of purpose. 🙌

From Brambles to Beauty – Volunteers at Work

On Saturday, our amazing Friends of Grove Farm volunteers — Deborah, Fred and Sue — teamed up with the brilliant crew from GoodGym Ealing (Steph, Sevan, Kash and Afshin) for another busy conservation day at Grove Farm Nature Reserve 🌿💚.

This time, the hard work took us to the top of David Lloyd Lane near Sudbury Hill station, where brambles had once again taken over. Armed with loppers, rakes (and plenty of energy), we cleared the patch back to ready for next year.

Not only did we tackle the brambles, but we also removed 5 full bags of rubbish and 3 bags of recyclables ♻️ — including some unusual “finds” like stray cereal boxes well past their best-before date!

Huge thanks to everyone who came along, including our partners at , whose energy always makes these days fun and rewarding. Together, we’re keeping this special local nature reserve cared for and thriving 🌱🌸.

After working through the top of the lane, we focused on clearing more of the rubbish from along the lane as well as finding some Calvatia gigantea, commonly known in English as the giant puffball mushrooms.

Want to join us next month? Send us a DM and join us on the 25/20/24 at 10am — it’s a brilliant way to give back, get outside and meet new people.

🌳 Discovering Hidden Wonders at Grove Farm! 🌿

Yesterday's Nature Walk with John Wells was a fantastic introduction to our beautiful Grove Farm Nature Reserve. We explored the tiny but mighty world of mosses and lichens—spotlighting species like Grimmia pulvinata and Dicranoweisia cirrata (mosses), plus lichens such as Xanthoria parietina and Parmotrema perlatum.

🔍 Did you know:

🤝 Lichens are not single organisms, but amazing partnerships between fungi and either algae or cyanobacteria, each helping the other survive in tough conditions.

🌞 Some British lichens, like the brilliantly coloured Xanthoria parietina, can survive on exposed rocks, trees, and even rooftops, tolerating extreme dryness by becoming dormant.

🧱 Mosses such as Grimmia pulvinata thrive in urban areas, often colonising old walls and even rooftops due to their tolerance for drought and sun.

🪺 Moss and lichen communities provide nesting material for birds, shelter for minute insects, and store moisture that benefits other plants.

⏳ Lichens grow incredibly slowly, sometimes less than 1mm per year—some specimens can be over a hundred years old!

🙏 Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating Grove Farm’s rich biodiversity! Can't wait for our next adventure in the wild? 🌍

On a bright November morning, volunteers from Friends of Grove Farm, teamed up with for the monthly Grove Farm litter pick! 💪🍂 Special thanks to Ash, Sevan, Kash, Ed, Joseph, Siobhan, Louise, Ian, Bharti and Amrita.

This time, our finds ranged from drinks cans and bottles to flytipped household and building waste, a fake braid, a Bluetooth speaker, and even half a Halloween mask! The highlight? Kash’s cameo picking a particularly gruesome Rubicon carton for a film student's project 🎬.

Despite leaving the lanes spotless, Grove Farm still needs help to clear out bigger flytips and keep the area thriving. Join us and Friends of Grove Farm at our next conservation day next month - sign up to keep our nature reserve beautiful!
