When the charity first started, our work to address the legacy of conflict was focused on landmines and the explosive remnants of war.

The Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation is a UK registered charity (no.1140911) for victims of conflict that was founded in 2011 by football legend Sir Bobby Charlton. This took the form of: developing new technologies that would make the removal of landmines quicker and safer; mine risk education for the most vulnerable communities where the presence of landmines and unexploded ordnance continue to threaten lives on a daily basis; and work to improve surgical techniques and prosthetics for those who had suffered explosive blast injuries and limb loss. This work continues today and has delivered some impressive results. However, following a review in 2017 we have recognised that there is more we can and must do to support conflict affected communities more directly. As a result of listening to our beneficiaries & partners, and studying the impact of war on civilian populations, we now work more holistically on conflict recovery and take an asset based approach to those we aim to support. We have added humanitarian and development projects to our programmes and now conduct a wider range of training for conflict affected communities. One of the key mechanisms for delivering these interventions are the network of conflict recovery centres that we are developing in war torn countries. While all conflicts have economic, social, environmental and cultural consequences for communities, each situation and community is unique and the conflict recovery centres are an asset that can be shaped to the particular needs and aspirations of people in each location.

We were saddened to learn of the recent passing of one of the founding members of the pioneering Bobby Charlton Soccer Schools, Barry Whitbread.

Sir Bobby and Barry shared a passion for supporting young people, watching them progress and thrive through football. Hugely popular with everyone who passed through the soccer school gates, Barry will be remembered for his dedication, discipline, and encouraging everyone to believe in themselves.

A quiet humanitarian, who made life better for countless people affected by conflict or living through war.

A gentleman, a legend, our friend and our hero.

Nine years ago almost to the day, Sir Bobby and Harry met at St. George’s Park. Mutual admiration and respect.

On this day in 1956, an 18-year-old Bobby Charlton stepped onto the Old Trafford pitch for his Manchester United debut against Charlton Athletic, and a legend was born.

Playing through a hidden ankle injury, he scored twice within five minutes (32', 37') to power United to a 4-2 victory in front of 41,439 fans.

Today we remember the legendary Duncan Edwards on what would have been his 90th birthday.

Duncan was Sir Bobby’s best friend. They completed their national service together, they played for the Army football team together, and then of course they played for Manchester United together. His tragic death after the Munich air disaster broke Sir Bobby’s heart.

"Ask me who is the greatest footballer the world has ever seen... Duncan Edwards. Don't ask me how much greater he would have become. It defies imagination. What's bigger than a colossus? Think about that... They were truly great, but Duncan was the greatest."

Today we remember Roger Hunt MBE, who passed away OTD in 2021. Roger was a legend of English football, a World Cup winner, and a cherished friend of our founder, Sir Bobby.

On this International Day of Peace, we remember how moved Sir Bobby Charlton was by the devastation of war on communities, and especially young people. He founded the SBCF to help conflict survivors rebuild healthy, fear-free lives. To him, peace meant giving people back their lives.

Today, we cherish his legacy by supporting those affected. We do this through the provision of rehabilitation, prosthetics, therapy, vocational training, and of safe places for children to play football together, and all the emotional and health benefits it brings.

Our trustee Jane is running her 11th London 10k next Sunday for the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation 🏃‍♀️

Funds raised will go to community clubs across the country, giving children from conflict-affected backgrounds access to free football.

As local pitches vanish and costs rise, free football across England is disappearing. For families struggling to put food on the table, paying for sport is simply out of reach.

Grounded in Sir Bobby’s belief in the power of football to improve lives, we want to make access available to children facing challenging lives. It helps them make friends, build their confidence, and gives them the vital sense of belonging many of us take for granted.
