We've been speaking with residents and businesses across Makerfield hearing about their environmental priorities - people want warmer homes, green jobs and training, protection from flooding, better public transport and are proud of their green spaces and communities.

We're calling on the next MP for Makerfield to back solutions that benefit people and planet - to cut our bills, create jobs and protect our future.

Dear Makerfield by-election candidates,

Will you step up to create a fairer, more prosperous future for Makerfield?

Last winter, homes and businesses in Makerfield were flooded – again. It’s happening more and more, here and everywhere else, because of climate change. That’s nearly 6,000 local properties at high risk of flooding by 2050. We need an MP who will keep people safe from extreme weather and take urgent climate action – before it gets much worse.

Less than half the homes in Makerfield have decent insulation. That’s nearly 25,000 local households with unnecessarily high energy bills. All at a time when prices are set to rise by an average of £221 from July. We need an MP who will back lower energy bills and job creation by rolling out insulation and cheap, homegrown renewable energy.

But some politicians – whose parties are funded by billionaires and
fossil fuel interests – want to scrap climate action. That makes zero sense.

The win-win solutions to the climate crisis can improve everyone’s lives. We’re talking about cheap energy, homes that stay warm in winter and cool in summer, long-term jobs, training and retraining opportunities, better public transport, thriving green spaces, clean air and clean waterways.

Nearly 95,000 people work in Greater Manchester’s green technology sector and it’s growing fast. Surely, investing in workers now and creating a fairer, more prosperous future for everyone is simply common sense?

Yours,
Greater Manchester Friends of the Earth network

Today, we met with Jeff Smith at his constituency office in Withington. We were proud to deliver a petition from local people who are calling on the government to create a new law stopping UK businesses from causing harm to people and nature in their supply chains. This will help us to protect precious forests around the world and the communities and wildlife that depend on them. It's time to put Planet over profit!

Help us continue to campaign for the new law by joining our next meeting on Tuesday 9th June, 6.30pm at Green Fish Resource Centre, 46-50 Oldham Street, Manchester, M4 1LE. See https://www.manchesterfoe.org.uk/events/event/campaigns-meeting/ for more details
