🌿 Yarmouth Life Civic Forum — Community Update

We recently had a productive meeting with Mr Wilson from the council, where we discussed a number of important local issues.

🗑️ Bulk Collection

We were given a clearer understanding of the challenges around bulk waste collection, particularly relating to fridges and freezers.
It’s clear there are reasons behind the delays and issues, and he will continue to follow this up.

🌱 Improving Our Green Spaces

We also continued discussions around transforming unused or muddy patches of land into areas that can be enjoyed by the community.

These spaces have the potential to become:

🌿 Small nature areas
🚶 Walking routes
🪑 Resting points for those who need them
🚶‍♂️ Accessibility Matters

We are seeing more areas become walking and cycling friendly, which is fantastic.

However, there is one key point we must not overlook:

👉 Without seating, there is no walking for many people

Not everyone can walk long distances without rest.
By introducing seating and stopping points, we make these spaces accessible to:

Older residents
Those with limited mobility
Families and carers
🌍 Looking Ahead

These green spaces are not just about appearance — they are about:

Inclusion
Accessibility
Community well being

We believe small changes like this can make a big difference to everyday life.

📢 Stay Tuned

There is more to come on this, and we’ll keep you updated as progress continues.

Improvements for the town centre and surrounding areas are on the way. Dedicated police officers and the introduction of town wardens are also on the way, with powers to deal with more of the issues people are raising and that many of us are seeing for ourselves.

Views on the look of the Market Place may differ, and that is fair enough, but one thing remains the same — it is our Market Place. If we want it to improve and thrive, it needs the people of Great Yarmouth to use it.

We understand there are a lot of shops gone. Some of that is down to businesses moving out of town, but let’s be honest, the internet has taken more trade away from town centres than almost anything else. Amazon, Temu, Vinted and countless other online stores have changed the way people shop.

That means the only people who can really complain about the lack of shops are those who are not also choosing to spend their money online.

Whatever your views, please remember that we still have local companies, independent traders, and sole traders doing their best to make a go of things. They deserve support, because once they are gone, they are gone.

If we want a stronger town centre, we have to be part of keeping it alive.

Yarmouth Life Civic Forum

There are plenty of pages and sites already dedicated to moaning about the areas we live in.

This is not one of them.

Yarmouth Life Civic Forum is about constructive discussion, local pride, and finding practical ways to improve the communities we call home. Yes, there will be conversations about issues that need attention, but they will be just that — sensible, focused discussions aimed at improvement, not endless negativity.

The goal is to work with the people who actually live in these areas, alongside local councillors where needed, to help make our towns and neighbourhoods better places to live.

We will also be looking for people to become spokespersons for their area — local voices who care about their community, want to represent it properly, and help make sure its concerns and ideas are heard.

To keep things organised, each day will focus on a different area:

Monday – Great Yarmouth
Tuesday – Caister
Wednesday – Gorleston
Thursday – North of the A47
Friday – South of the A47
Weekends – Let’s show what is great about living where we do

This page is about pride, ideas, honesty, and action.

If something needs improving, let’s talk about it properly.
If something is good, let’s celebrate it.
If people want to help make a difference, let’s bring them in.

Less moaning. More doing. More pride in where we live.

Yarmouth Rest & Green Project

Here’s an idea that could help make Great Yarmouth a nicer place to live while also supporting young people and bringing communities together.

Across the town there are many grass verges that have been damaged by vehicles driving over them. Instead of grass, many areas are now muddy patches that don’t look great and are difficult to maintain.

Rather than constantly trying to repair them, the idea would be to turn these areas into small community rest and green spaces.

The idea is simple.

Where grass verges have been badly damaged we could:

• remove the damaged grass
• lay bark chippings to keep the area tidy
• plant seasonal bulbs so flowers appear throughout the year
• install rustic benches made from reclaimed tree trunks
• plant small fir trees that could be decorated at Christmas by local residents

This would turn areas that are currently an eyesore into pleasant spaces for people to sit, rest and enjoy their surroundings.

Why this matters

One thing many people talk about is the lack of seating around the town.

Adding small rest points along walking routes would allow older residents and people with mobility issues to take breaks and enjoy being out again.

Something as simple as a bench can make a big difference to someone’s ability to go for a walk and spend time outdoors.

Helping young people too

The project could also include youth apprenticeships in areas such as:

• horticulture
• landscaping
• bushcraft
• environmental care
• animal welfare and wildlife awareness

Young people could help maintain these spaces while gaining practical skills.

Community Christmas Trees

Each small green area could include a fir tree that local residents or groups could decorate at Christmas.

Over time this could lead to friendly neighbourhood competitions and help build pride in local areas.

Bringing communities together

Young people involved in the project could also help organise small activities with children such as building nature dens from trimmed branches and learning about local wildlife.

This helps children develop respect for their environment and a sense of ownership of their local space.

Small improvements across many streets could gradually help turn neglected spaces into welcoming places people are proud of.

What do you think about the Yarmouth Rest & Green Project?

Could this be something that would help improve our town?

The aim is simple:

Small ideas can grow into real improvements when people work together.
