Decorating David Shenton's Drag Queen Wallpaper
Saturday 20 June

Join artists CJ and Henri for a creative workshop inspired by the vibrant world of artist and cartoonist David Shenton.
Participants will help decorate a specially commissioned Drag Queen Wallpaper installation based on characters and imagery from David's celebrated comic strips. The wallpaper design originates from 'Get Her! A Drag Queen Psycho-Drama '(2008), a publication that reimagined and brought together stories from 'Prisoners of Love' and 'Desmond's Diary'.
David began 'Prisoners of Love' in 1991 as a weekly comic strip for Boyz magazine, following Des and Jeff through a series of surreal adventures filled with pop culture references, humour, and snapshots of q***r life. Among the wallpaper's stars are three legendary drag performers from London's early 1990s club scene: Regina Fong, Adrella and Millie Mopp.
We'll be adding paint to colour in printed images of the Drag Queens, adding make-up, vibrant hair and other embellishments, to help create a veritable Drag Queen Army!
The completed wallpaper will be part of 'Kindly Ease The Tension', the first major retrospective of David Shenton's work, which will be on display at Norwich Castle Museum & Art Gallery from 18 July 2026 to 10 January 2027. The exhibition is being curated by Ian Giles, who first met David when working on creating a series of q***r rambling walks as part of New Geographies - a public art project - in 2018.
It will form part of the installation behind David's iconic 'Duvet of Love' (1994), a moving memorial to friends Martyn and Nicholas, who died from AIDS-related illnesses. Made from thousands of badges collected throughout David's life, the duvet brings together personal memories, political activism, LGBTQ+ protest history, Pride marches, pop culture and everyday ephemera.
Whether you're a comic fan, a lover of drag culture, or simply enjoy getting creative, come along and help celebrate the humour, community and q***r history at the heart of David Shenton's extraordinary work.
