MSA MONDAYS!

⛲Jubilee Fountain 🎊

Jubilee Fountain in Malvern Wells (Wells Road near the junction with Grundy's Lane and Green Lane), was unveiled on 21 June 1887 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. On a hot summer day, local residents gathered after a church service to watch the unveiling, complete with cheers from the crowd. 👏

The monument provided fresh drinking water piped directly from the famous Holy Well spring. The fountain's water travelled via a huge 40,000-gallon reservoir hidden beneath Wells House School.

Not everything flowed smoothly, though. By 1895, local newspapers joked that thirsty travellers had a good chance of finding the fountain dry! Over the years, it fell into neglect, its drinking cup disappeared, and ownership became so unclear that it took more than a century to untangle.

Finally, in 2007, the fountain's ownership was officially secured, paving the way for restoration. Today, this Victorian landmark stands as a reminder of Malvern Wells' spring-water heritage and a community determined to preserve it. It is venerated at the well dressing festival every year with eye catching, elaborate designs. 🦉

MSA MONDAY!

Hidden in plain sight on the slopes of the Wyche, Weavers Well has quietly served the local community for generations. 💧🐴

Originally created in the late 19th century as a drinking trough for horses, donkeys and cattle travelling the common, the well soon became an important part of daily life in the area. Its fresh hill water also supported the steam-powered quarrying machinery that helped shape the landscape in the 1920s and 30s.

Despite its name, Weavers Well has no connection to weaving! It was named in the 1990s after local resident Cora Weaver, who helped rediscover and preserve this forgotten piece of heritage.

What makes Weavers Well so special is not just the flowing spring water, but the story of a community that has continued to value, restore and protect its local history. Thanks to heritage funding and local care, this once-overlooked landmark has been lovingly renovated and remains a quiet reminder of the area’s rich past and enduring community spirit. ⛰️✨

Occasionally, we get out of Malvern to explore other wells! ⛲

Glastonbury feels like a sister town to Malvern, connected in many ways, especially for their love and appreciation of their spring water!✨

The iconic Chalice Well is a loved and venerated part of the town, many come from afar to leave offerings and to take the waters from the chalybeate spring. 💧
The beautiful spring amongst peaceful gardens makes for a pleasurable visit to connect to the waters.

What wells outside of Malvern do you love to visit? Tell us in the comments ⛲

💧MSA MONDAY⛲️

Let's talk about one of the water features that has attracted great attention this Well Dressing Festival

Stocks Fountain ⛲️

Installed in 1895, Stocks Fountain was once a public drinking fountain with an adjacent animal trough and supplied by the local spring water main. It was erected by the Malvern Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, providing water for local residents, cattle and dogs near the old North Malvern pound.

The fountain stands beside the historic stocks, whipping post and animal pound, rare surviving reminders of the old parish justice system, where offenders were once punished and stray livestock held until reclaimed by their owners. By the late 1800s, the site had already become a historic curiosity, with local newspapers reporting the mysterious theft of parts of the original whipping post and stocks.

Although the elaborate fountain head and trough have disappeared, the surviving cast-iron pillar and base of the trough still marks this remarkable corner of Malvern’s past.

Today, the fountain is brought back to life each year during Malvern’s Well Dressing Festival by YarnBomb Great Malvern ✨ Sue’s incredible “Phoenix Rising” display this year deservedly won the Chairman’s Cup, transforming a place once associated with punishment and strays into a celebration of creativity, colour and community spirit ❤️
