British Science Week 2026 Project Report
During British Science Week 2026, 999 Dunmow & District Squadron Air Cadets successfully completed a hands-on engineering project to build four RSGB FM radio receiver kits. The activity involved cadets aged 12–17 alongside staff members and took place over two parade nights, Monday and Thursday, from 19:30 to 21:15. The sessions were supervised by two retired RAF Radio Engineers, whose experience and guidance were invaluable throughout the project.
The initiative was designed to complement the squadron’s existing radio communications syllabus, providing cadets with practical, real-world application of theoretical knowledge. Over the two evenings, cadets worked collaboratively in small teams to assemble the kits, gaining insight into electronic construction and circuit design.
A key highlight of the project was the opportunity for cadets to learn how to safely use a soldering iron—an entirely new skill for most participants. Under close supervision, they developed confidence in soldering components onto circuit boards, an essential skill in electronics and engineering. In addition, cadets were introduced to a range of electronic components, learning their functions and general uses within a circuit.
The project also covered fundamental concepts such as capacitance values and resistor colour coding. Cadets demonstrated strong engagement and curiosity, asking questions and supporting one another throughout the build process. The hands-on nature of the activity significantly enhanced their understanding and retention of these concepts.
Overall, the project was highly successful and well received by all involved. Cadets expressed clear enthusiasm for similar practical engineering activities in the future, highlighting the value of experiential learning. This initiative not only supported the existing training programme but also inspired interest in STEM-related skills and potential career pathways.
