We were absolutely delighted to welcome back Lindsey Dixon-Barrell and hear all about her journey into mindfulness, and her now very popular Facebook group. Her story was both inspiring and uplifting. Lindsey shared how her path into mindfulness grew from personal challenges and a real desire to support others with their wellbeing. Drawing on her own experiences, she has developed a warm and practical approach to helping people manage their mental health, build confidence and navigate life’s ups and downs.

A great start to 2026! It was lovely to welcome Becci from our chosen charity for 2025/26, East Surrey Domestic Abuse Service (ESDAS) and to hear more about the vital work they do supporting individuals and families in our community.

The highlight of the evening was Jason Sandy – Thames Mudlarker. He captivated everyone with fascinating stories from the foreshore of the River Thames, sharing incredible finds and insights into London’s hidden history. His passion, knowledge and storytelling truly brought the past to life.

All in all, a brilliant evening and a wonderful way to begin the year!

To wrap up the year, the Belles gathered for a final meeting in festive style with mulled wine, mince pies and Christmas jumpers 🎄 We kicked off fundraising for our Charity of the year - East Surrey Domestic Abuse Service (ESDAS) - with a Christmas raffle and then challenged our crafting skills felting an adorable seasonal mouse. A great time had by one and all. Wishing all our members a very happy and healthy end to the year and we look forward to seeing you in 2026! 🎉

It was a pleasure to present a cheque at our November meeting to our Charity of the Year, CSSEF Chloe's and Sophie's Special Ears Fund, which supports children and young people with hearing impairments. We also awarded our bursaries for 2025/26 and celebrated Carla being confirmed as our President for another year. The quiz wrapped up our evening adding plenty of fun and laughter. A special thanks to Lillian and Sue from Ashtead WI for their support.

A huge thank you to everyone who visited the Great Bookham Belles WI stall at Bookham Village Day today – it was wonderful to see so many friendly faces!

This year’s theme was a Teddy Bears’ Picnic, and we were thrilled to showcase the fabulous efforts of our talented members. Special thanks go to our Craft and Laughs group, who lovingly knitted Trauma Teddies, and to all who created the adorable teddy-decorated jolly jars, each one filled to the brim with sweets.

We are so grateful to every member who played a part in bringing our stall to life – whether by designing, making, crafting, decorating, volunteering, or simply lending a hand. Your creativity and community spirit made the day truly special.

💛 From all of us at Great Bookham Belles WI – thank you for helping us spread a little joy in our village today.

At June's meeting we were fortunate to welcome Dr. Anica Zeyen as our guest speaker! 🐾 Representing Guide Dogs UK, Anica shared her incredible journey living with cone-rod dystrophy and Charles Bonnet syndrome, all while being a Professor at Royal Holloway and a mother of two.

Her independence is greatly supported by her amazing guide dogs. After Lassie retired, Maisie stepped up as her new guide dog and even joined us, taking it upon herself to personally greet and endear herself to every single one of our members!

We learned fascinating insights into Guide Dogs' global breeding program and the intensive training these pups undergo. We also heard how the dogs are matched with their human and in Anica and Lassie's case the partnership resulted in being crowned Guide Dog Partnership of the Year in 2023, with Lassie having saved Anica's life twice! The evening highlighted the incredible bond and life-changing work of guide dogs.

A Fiery and Fascinating Visit to Adam Aaronson Glass Studio!
Our Out and About group had an absolutely brilliant time Adam Aaronson Glass Studio in West Horsley for a glass-blowing demonstration! It was a really fascinating (if a little hot!) trip, and everyone came home with a unique, lucky dip bauble. Adam creates everything from stunning sculptures, ornaments, vases and bowls to exquisite door handles at his studio. Check out his work at adamaaronson.com!

Members at our May meeting were captivated by Jo Foat's talk on "Lumberjills," the forgotten army of women who worked in forestry during World War II. Jo interviewed many of these remarkable women, now in their 90s, for her research and books. Her presentation took us on a photographic journey showcasing their vital roles in ensuring the wood needed for the war effort was available. We were amazed by the physical demands they faced (without safety equipment!) and the societal attitudes of the time, such as the shock over them wearing trousers. Jo truly brought the camaraderie and spirit of these women to life through her talk. Many of us came away wanting to find out more - always a sign of a great talk.
