🪰 FLY STRIKE 🪰
🚑 This is a medical emergency!!!! 🚑

On the third day of Rabbit Awareness Week, we want to touch on the awareness of Fly strike.

With temperatures rising, an increased amount of flies are present and this increases the risk of Fly Strike to your pets. Eggs are laid by flies either directly onto your pet or in their environment which then hatch into maggots and these maggots pe*****te the skin and eat the living tissue of your pets.

📝 It is worth noting that Fly strike can affect any pet who may be have problems with mobility, open wounds or faecal/ urine soiling on their rear end! 📝

On the first day of Rabbit Awareness Week, we want to advise on the importance of vaccinating your Rabbit and what the vaccinations cover against! Diseases can also spread more rapidly in the heat!

📝 It is worth noting that even indoor rabbits should also have their vaccinations given!

❗️Extreme Heat Warning❗️
With temperatures continuing to rise this week it's important to be mindful of our pets! Our pets are not acclimatised to heat and for something preventable, heat stroke is still too common for us to see this time of year, particularly in dogs.

Signs of heat stroke in dogs include:
☀️ Heavy panting
☀️ Drooling or foaming at the mouth
☀️ Weakness or collapse
☀️ Vomiting and diarrhoea
☀️ Confusion
☀️ Bright red or pale gums
☀️ Shaking or seizures

First aid measures you can take if you suspect heat stroke:
● Move the dog into the shade
● Poor cool water slowly over their body
● Offer them small amounts of water
● Create a breeze
● Then call the nearest Vet

The quicker your dog is cooled the better! Prevention is also key by not going for walks at the hottest time of day and NEVER leave your dog in the car.
❄️ Keep them cool with water, cooling jackets or mats and fans indoors.

❗️Extra caution should be taken if your dog is elderly, obese or a flat-faced breed.

Remember, missing a walk won't kill them!

Please also be mindful if you do have an appointment for your pet next week. Keep them cool in an air conditioned car, please do not walk them to the clinic.
