A dress for a tartan heroine. Here's Suzi installing her fabulous creation, in our Plaid Nan Granndach exhibition.
The 18th century redingote (riding coat) inspired frock is in celebration of Jane Maxwell , Duchess of Gordon. She championed tartan fashion in order to support the dwindling weaving industry. A doyenne of London High Society, she tried to create a new southern market by holding 'tartan balls', kick starting a fashion trend that would bring aspects of the Highland dress to the masses again and again.

Following its star turn, the gown, in ancient Gordon tartan will be available to dress up in by booking your ' Adventures in Costume' experience at the museum.

Plaid nan Granndach textile exhibition runs till July. Kindly supported by the Cairngorms Trust

A recent restoration project carried out by one of our volunteers, Jess. This wheel was one of the first items in the museum collection, we can tell it’s been a hard worker in the past! Now it’s yarn spinning journey will continue for years to come. You’ll be able to see this wheel in our upcoming exhibition ‘Plaid nan Granndach’ celebrating strathspey weaving from the 15th of may.
