Ever run under some trees when it started raining?

You're in the perfect place to watch, smell and hear how trees transform during a rain shower 🌧️

Trees don't just contribute to rain by releasing water vapour into the air 🌳

They also slow the flow of rainwater over the land and their roots allow more water to seep into the soil💧

By intercepting rainfall and increasing water storage in soil, our woods protect us from the impacts of both drought and flooding ⛈️

In fact, research from University of Plymouth suggests that increasing temperate rainforest cover in the west of the UK could reduce drought risk in the east 🌱

The results are in... Who do you think won this year’s competition?

We can now reveal that the winner is... The Bendy Tree!

Bending its way to victory, the native wych elm is a lone survivor on the central promenade in Newcastle, County Down, Northern Ireland.

This year’s competition, supported by Postcode Lottery UK players, celebrated trees that have survived , which The Bendy Tree certainly has 💪

No stranger to the hardships of life, this remarkable tree has resisted Dutch elm disease and continues to cling on in a harsh and evolving landscape ⛈️

Bending over backwards to survive, it has captured the hearts of locals. A well-deserved win for an incredible tree 💚

Do you have enough trees near your home? 🏡

Over 11 million people in the UK live in chronically tree-deprived areas, or 'tree deserts' ⚠️

These areas are often hotter and more polluted, which impacts people’s physical and mental health 😷

The Government’s England Tree Action Plan will set out how to spend the £1 billion budget allocated for woods and trees for 2026 to 2030 💰

This funding must be spent in a targeted and evidenced-based way which delivers maximum impact for those who need trees most 🌳

Is this the most unlikely survivor of this year’s competition yet?

Throughout the competition we’ve celebrated some astounding trees, but growing in perhaps the most unlikely of places is our final nominee, the Culmstock Yew🌳

Leaning from the top of a 20-metre-high church tower is one of the last places you’d expect to see a tree, but this yew has been watching over Culmstock village for at least 200 years.

Growing straight out of the flint, the yew is sustained by nothing but lime and sand mortar and the occasional watering during hot weather.

In 1904, the tree was reported to be failing but clearly bounced back as both the Culmstock Yew and its tower-top home remain healthy today.

No one knows how it got there, but mentions in a local directory from 1857 highlight that its existence pre-dates residents’ living memories.
