We had an excellent presentation at our meeting yesterday from Matt Kefford, pictured here with President Claire, who came to tell us about the inspirational work of the charity Medical Detection Dogs. We were in awe of Matt's enthusiasm and his depth of knowledge about the work of the charity.
Co founded over 15 years ago by Dr Claire Guest, who believed disease had an odour and dogs could be trained to spot them, their work has grown and developed in that time. MDD have Medical Alert Assistance Dogs who support people with complex health conditions such as PoTs, Type One Diabetes, Addison's Disease and severe allergies when they are in danger of having a potentially life threatening medical event. Matt showed us videos of several people who have a Medical Alert Assistance Dog giving them confidence, independence, freedom and hope for the future. The impact on their lives was life changing.
Their Bio Detection Dogs are trained to detect even the tiniest smells associated with diseases like cancer, Parkinson's and bacterial infections. This pioneering work could lead to dogs playing an important role is screening for diseases at an early stage and improving patient care in hospitals.
What an amazing charity! Thank you, Matt for coming to tell us all about the work of MDD.

Desperately sad news from Kesteven Rideability, one of our favourite local charities, where the volunteers do such excellent work in bringing joy to disabled riders. Please look out for the donation page they will be setting up to help them replace their stolen equipment. ❤️

We are all extremely saddened by the news that our good friend and fellow Rotarian John Asher has died. John was a founder member of our club in 1981 and served as President from 1985-6. He founded our International Trade-Aid Charity in 2006 which has donated humanitarian aid around the world and he only recently stepped down as Chairman. John also started and ran our Club's popular Annual Easter Duck Race in Wyndham Park, Grantham for many years. He was there to cheer us all on on Easter Saturday as usual.

John was definitely one of kind. An extremely hardworking and dedicated Rotarian, he was always the first to put himself forward if a volunteer was needed for anything at all. At recent meetings, he still wanted to serve fellow Rotarians their dinner and had to be gently told that it was his turn to sit and be served.

John was proud to be a Rotarian and a member of our club and we were all proud to have known him. Here he is proudly wearing his Rotary tie and his 5 Sapphire Paul Harris Award. Rotary International also awarded him the coveted Service Above Self Award for his humanitarian work which very few members in Rotary GB&I have ever received.

We shall miss him so much for his kindness, the twinkle in his eye and the scrapes he sometimes got into. He was always the first to visit a member if they were ill or in hospital.

Rest in peace, John after an amazing life serving others.

We send our love and condolences to John's wife, Brenda who was always by his side, and to all his family.
