Gosport And Fareham Inshore Rescue Service We are one of the busiest lifeboats in the UK covering Eastern Solent and Portsmouth Hbr. Run by volunteers. Need us? Call 999 and ask for Coastguard.

Gosport and Fareham Inshore Rescue Service is an independent lifeboat service founded in 1969. As a Declared Facility for HM Coastguard, GAFIRS provides emergency lifeboat services and free marine rescue cover in Portsmouth Harbour and through the north eastern and central Solent to Titchfield Haven. GAFIRS delivers a vital service for both recreational sailors and professional shipping. Our emergency crews are available on pager call-out 24 hours a day, 365 days a year and in all weathers. On average GAFIRS responds to over 110 emergency incidents per year, making us one of the busiest lifeboat stations in the country. Whilst our primary role is to provide marine rescue services in the Solent, we also respond to other incidents in Hampshire which require the services of our trained personnel. We are affiliated to the Royal Life Saving Society and the British Canoe Union and our cadet members provide a canoe rescue service. Our communication, navigation and seamanship skill are to international standards with many of our crew being Royal Yachting Association certificated and some holding instructor qualifications. GAFIRS is a registered charity and all members are unpaid volunteers who give their time freely to assist others, but even so in costs about £50,000 a year to cover our day-to-day running costs; this does not include capital costs such as replacing equipment and lifeboats. Whilst we have an abundance of enthusiasm and commitment, we need the support of others to help fund our lifeboat service and continue with our rescue and lifesaving work. We are most grateful and give you our thanks for any support can give us.

A busy week for your local lifeboat service! 🚨

Last night, while wrapping up a training session, our crew were tasked to assist a sailing vessel that had run aground near Pewit Island.

With our Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) close by, both boats responded to assist the casualty vessel, while also providing a valuable opportunity for those in training to put their skills into practice.

This brings us to tasking 89 of the year, and our third call-out in just four days!

We’d love to say it’s time for a well-earned rest, but the Solent never sleeps! 🌊

As your local independent lifeboat service, our dedicated volunteers remain ready to respond whenever they’re needed, day or night 🧡

Last night the GAFIRS team again worked through the night after being alerted to a vessel which had gone aground in the vicinity of Pewit Island.

Using specialist equipment, the crew were able to secure the yacht and evacuate the casualty by lifeboat to a place of safety.

This task is number 88 of the year, and the second night in a row our volunteers have worked through the night to keep our local water users safe 🛟

Another long night for our crews as they were alerted to a vessel in difficulty south of Gillkicker shortly after 3am. The vessel, whilst travelling through thick and heavy fog, had suffered an electrical fault leaving it without navigation lights, charts or VHF. It was also unable to engage astern. Luckily a nearby pilot boat assisted until Gosport Lifeboat arrived to take the vessel under tow and back to the safety of Gosport Marina.

The crew operated in little to no visibility last night in what could have been a very dangerous environment. Luckily the Joan Dora Fuller used its radar and navigational aids to help her home safely, with the crew departing around 6am, 3 hours after being initially tasked!

A huge thank you to Harry Watson who recently cycled from London to Brighton, raising an amazing £750! Congratulations Harry! 🚲

As an independent lifeboat station, we rely on members of the public just like Harry, who go above and beyond to raise money for us. So thank you to Harry and to all those who donate to keep us afloat! ⛴️ 🛟

A midnight rendezvous for our crews last night, as they were alerted at 11:38pm to a person in the water in Southsea. 🚨

After a quick launch and lap of Stokes Bay, the crew were stood down knowing the casualty was safely ashore and being cared for.

Before recovering, they couldn’t resist capturing this moment, taking in the lights of our station and the familiar sight of the Spinnaker Tower in the distance, which is always a welcoming sight for our crew after a tasking 🧡

Sunday’s duty day saw both of our lifeboats put through their paces, and it wasn’t long before that training was put into action.

Following the morning crew brief, both Gosport Lifeboat, the Joan Dora Fuller, and Gosport Inshore Lifeboat, the Ian Fuller, launched for a period of training.

Almost immediately, both crews were tasked by Solent Coastguard to assist a jetski with three people onboard which had suffered steering failure close to the entrance to Langstone Harbour.

Working together, both lifeboats were able to safely tow the jetski to safety, ensuring all three people onboard were safe and well.

A great example of our crews putting their training into practice when it matters. 🚤💙

Yesterday, our volunteers spent the day at the annual Michaelmas Fayre, and what a busy day it was!

It was fantastic to meet so many new faces, chat with the local community and welcome visitors aboard our fundraising boat, the Cams Cutter.

A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hello and support GAFIRS, your continued support means so much to our volunteers. ❤️
