RNLI Fishguard Lifeboat

Yesterday (16 October 2026) at 7pm some of our volunteer crew were tasked to attend Fishguard Rugby Club for a throwing and accurancy training session (Darts match).
Also in attendance were members of HM Coastguard Fishguard to play for the new Fishguard RNLI v Fishguard Coastguard trophy.

To even up the numbers some lifeboat crew became honorary coastguards for the evening, and following some close games Fishguard RNLI came out with the victory.

But it's not all about the competition, we work closely with our local Coastguard team and will often be tasked to the same incident. It's good to be able to socialise with those who we would otherwise only see as blue or yellow patches and put faces to those we work with.

In the same manner we also play RNLI St Davids Lifeboat and RNLI Cardigan Lifeboat.
A win over Cardigan this year would mean all 3 trophies proudly displayed in Fishguard lifeboat station..... can we pull it off?

Thanks to crew member Bryn for arranging the evening and to the local coastguard for taking up the challenge. We look forward to next year.

A new lifeboat for Fishguard RNLI - Coming 2028.

Last week, crew and volunteers at Fishguard RNLI met with representatives of the regional management team for an update on the RNLI’s 2040 Lifeboat Fleet Strategy and the exciting changes coming to our station in the coming years, now shared publicly.

Operational and rescue data shows that demand is changing, particularly with increased recreational use of the coast, including swimming and paddlesports. Our fleet must evolve to meet these changing needs.

A key part of this change is the introduction of the new Coastal Lifeboat—an 11-metre, self-righting, water-jet-propelled lifeboat. Shaped by volunteer input and equipped with the latest marine technology, its optimal area of operation will be within 10 nautical miles of the coast, while retaining the capability to operate up to 25 nautical miles offshore.

Our station is one of those selected to receive a new Coastal Lifeboat which, combined with the existing D-class inshore lifeboat provides the most appropriate lifesaving capability for our area. Alongside our flanking stations at New Quay, Cardigan and St Davids, we will continue to provide lifesaving cover across South Cardigan Bay and work closely with other emergency services when required.

The RNLI has announced that all Trent-class all-weather lifeboats will leave service by the end of 2028. For Fishguard, this means eventually saying goodbye to Blue Peter VII.

Arriving in 1994 and funded by the 1993 Blue Peter “Pieces of Eight” appeal, she remains the only all-weather lifeboat to carry the iconic Blue Peter name. By the time she leaves Fishguard, she will have given 34 years of service to the station—a remarkable testament to the skill and dedication of generations of volunteer crew and station coxswain and mechanics.

Blue Peter VII is a special part of Fishguard’s station and local heritage. When the time comes, we hope to give her the farewell she deserves.
Until then, we will continue to train on and operate the assets we have. We are excited for this next chapter in our stations history, and look forward to be able to share more information with you as it becomes available.

✏️ Could you spare a few hours a week to support our station and crew whilst staying dry?

We are looking to recruit a volunteer Admin Officer.
In this role you will be an important part of the Lifeboat Management Group (LMG) as well as the wider crew.

This role is flexible and the hours can be done at any time, or for a more social experience you could catch up with the crew at their regular weekly training session and carry out the admin role once the crew are out training.

We usually prefer to admire this building from afar and give it a wide berth, however tonight was a little different.
Rather than our usual training night our crew had the opportunity to cross the bridge to Ynys Meicel for a private tour of Strumble Head lighthouse.

It was a fantastic opportunity to see the lighthouse and grounds up close and learn more about its history and rather special Fresnel lens.

When travelling this stretch of coast, you can identify Strumble Head by its sequence of 4 flashes every 15 seconds.

Thanks to Geoff and Nat for their time, knowledge and enthusiasm and thanks to crew member Flo for arranging the visit with them.

Yesterday (Monday 29 September) our volunteer crew were paged at 1.10pm with a request to launch the charity's Trent class all-weather lifeboat (ALB) Blue Peter VII.

The information received was that there were 2 paddleboards with two dogs in difficulty off Pwllgwaelod and were being blown further from shore.

Colleagues from HM Coastguard Fishguard made their way to the area whilst the ALB made best way to the last reported position. Once on scene the casualties were located and brought aboard, assessed and taken back to the lifeboat station.

The sea conditions and weather around our coast can at times be unpredictable and can catch out the most experienced of water users.

Always ensure you have the correct safety equipment, and that it is well maintained.
You should also ensure you have a means of contacting the coastguard such as mobile phone in a waterproof pouch, a personal VHF or personal locator beacon (PLB).
