Dear all, I have some happy/sad news.
At the end of September we will be moving away from Surrey to Cornwall and I will no longer be able to run the Gomshall Mill Breastfeeding Cafe.
The Cafe has been going for 10 years now and I have absolutely loved meeting all of you and being a little part of your life as new parents.
I will miss my Wednesday mornings more than I can fully express. 😩
However I will be at Gomshall Mill every Wednesday morning through September and am planning on bringing in cake!
Dates for your diary are the 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th September.
Please come for a coffee and cake and goodbye no matter how old your children are. It will be wonderful to see you before I go.
Do spread the word too if you know other mums who have been. I would love the chance to catch up with you all.
(Also if you have any books etc that you have borrowed, please do return them this month 😉)
Much love
Ruth xx

This is great! 😀

Different types of animals have different fat content in their milk. Notice how the rabbit, who will leave her young for many hours, has a really high fat content? Whereas the primate, who keeps her baby attached to her body all day and night, has a much lower fat content? This is because her baby is designed to feed often, so the fat isn't needed in such high amounts.

Now, look at human milk... our fat content is closest to the orangutang, suggesting we are supposed to keep our babies with us and feed them frequently. Essentially, we are a Carry species. Our babies can't follow us, and we can't go off and leave them in a nest alone all day. Our babies need holding and feeding often. 💜

Happy to assess tongue function at Gomshall Mill breastfeeding Cafe, if you have concerns.

This white coating on baby's tongue is NOT thrush, it's milk. Babies who are tongue tied are not able to clean the milk from their tongue as their tongues cannot reach the palate to scrape off the milk. We see this a lot and often babies are being treated with anti fungal medication. If you see this white coating, simply wipe it off with a damp washcloth but also consider having a qualified professional perform an oral assessment. ( Thrush is generally found inside the cheeks and is impossible to wipe off)

Breastfeeding Cafe tomorrow at 10 am, looking forward to seeing you again! Xx

Worth saying! X

If you have to use a bottle for whatever reason, use this technique and also PACED feeding.....

To promote good jaw development, ensure bottlefed babies are attaching with a wide mouth. Whilst the bottle won’t say ouch with a shallow latch, they’ve become wider necked to encourage more normal masseter muscle development - the consequences of poor oral development are wide-reaching. Many lactation consultants now also support bottle-feeding babies so if your baby can’t or won’t take the bottle effectively, it can be worth ruling out problems like tongue tie

No Breastfeeding Cafe tomorrow, back in March as normal. Apologies.

Fascinating reading 🧐

This photo showing droplets of breast milk fending off armies of harmful bacteria in Petri dishes is going viral on Facebook.⁣

The photo, posted by a biology student in England, features nine Petri dishes completely colonized with the bacteria M. Luteus, except in the center, where tiny puddles of breast milk have created what looks like “moats” of protection around themselves.⁣

The student, Vicky Green, said she had similar results with Petri dishes full of e.Coli and the dreaded anti-biotic resistant “super bug” MRSA.⁣

“The white spots in the middle are discs soaked in two samples of breastmilk,” Green wrote in the caption of her post. “See the clear bit around the discs ― that’s where the proteins in the milk have inhibited the bacteria!”⁣

An article from YourPediatrician.com explains how this is possible:⁣

“About 80 percent of the cells in breast milk are macrophages, cells that kill bacteria, fungi and viruses. Breast-fed babies are protected, in varying degrees, from a number of illnesses, including pneumonia, botulism, bronchitis, staphylococcal infections, influenza, ear infections, and German measles. Furthermore, mothers produce antibodies to whatever disease is present in their environment, making their milk custom-designed to fight the diseases their babies are exposed to as well.”⁣

What’s even more impressive is that the samples of milk in the photos came from the mother of a 15-month-old and a 3-year-old, providing further evidence that breast milk continues to protect against illness long beyond infancy.

Breastfeeding Cafe WILL be on tomorrow as normal...see you there 😊

This is also thought provoking. Good to have these encouragements in mind when supporting our friends and family members who are struggling....:and support is always available on a Wednesday at Gomshall Mill!!

Instead of:

This is so hard for you, it's OK to give in, you've done so well, no-one will think less of you if you stop now

Try

I know this is really hard for you right now. You're doing amazingly well with the challenges you've had. I know you're determined to make this work. How can I support you? And make this easier for you?

Instead of:

It's OK, not everyone can breastfeed

Try

I know this is something that's really important to you. Some Mums do have some really challenging obstacles, but the right help and support can really make all the difference. Do you want me to see if I can find some support locally?

Instead of:

It's not worth making yourself so upset over

Try

It's OK to be upset. It's OK to cry. It's OK to shout. I know you're having a really hard time, and you're going through some really big, tough emotions. It's OK, better than OK, it's good to let them out.

Instead of:

Why don't we start giving a few bottles so I can help.

Try

What's the most difficult thing you're going through at the moment? If we could resolve that would that make breastfeeding easier for you? Shall I see if there's any way we can resolve that issue together.

29/01/2019

Hoping to see you tomorrow at Gomshall Mill! 10-11.30 😊

21/01/2019
