The Orpheus Centre

The Orpheus Centre Orpheus is an independent specialist college and charity in Surrey, empowering young disabled adults through the arts 🎨🎭💃

Orpheus is an independent specialist college in Surrey that increases the confidence and skills of young disabled adults through the performing arts. We believe that every young disabled person should have the same opportunities as their non-disabled peers. We offer a holistic learning programme, a supported housing scheme and a domiciliary support service.

🙌 We are delighted that founder Sir Richard Stilgoe and staff member Nikki are finalists for this year's National Learning Disabilities & Autism Awards!

Nikki is up for the Support Worker of the Year award, with over 25 years of dedicated service at Orpheus. She has been an unwavering and valued presence, embodying everything that outstanding support work represents.
She brings something truly special to Orpheus every day: her great sense of humour and her infectious laugh. She has a remarkable ability to lift spirits, reduce stress and bring joy to even the most challenging days.
Her kind and compassionate nature has supported countless young people to live their lives with greater independence. She consistently treats each individual with dignity, patience and respect, celebrating their achievements and offering encouragement. Her genuine care and belief in young people empower them to grow in confidence and independence.

Sir Richard is in the running for Outstanding Contribution award, most notably through the founding of the Orpheus Centre almost 30 years ago. His vision was simple yet powerful: to create a place where young disabled people could develop independence, confidence and life skills through creativity, performance and community. Today, that vision has transformed thousands of lives.

At the heart of Sir Richard’s work is a deep belief in potential and inclusion. Through the Orpheus Centre, he has championed an approach that places the individual at the centre, nurturing talents and enabling young people to find their voice - often quite literally through music, theatre and the arts. His commitment has not only empowered students but also influenced perceptions, challenging societal barriers and promoting greater understanding of learning disability and autism.

Both have made incredible contributions to the sector over the last 30 years, and their impact is felt throughout the whole of Orpheus. We wish them the best of luck and look forward to the awards ceremony on 19th June!

🌱 Today our student Creative Activists were joined by Rosie from Leith Hill Place NT for a peaceful workshop.

Together they explored how it feels to be in and around nature, reflected on protecting the environment, and worked on bold pieces of bunting that will be displayed as part of a wider community project at Leith Hill Place.

We can’t wait to see how the bunting looks once it’s all joined up!

👍 The students have been working on their career focused Positive Affirmations during sessions. These are phrases that can help them with interviews when talking about their skills, or to keep up morale if they’re feeling anxious.

Do you have any go-to affirmations?

Lucy paints her nails purple and gold. She used to bite them when she was anxious. The polish gave her something else to focus on, one of the small, self-found strategies that helped her find her footing at .

Lucy describes herself as “very, very organised” someone who loves paperwork and tidying her room. She also wants to work in fashion, live in a flat, earn her own money and build a life for herself, just like her older sister’s.

These are the things she talks about now. She didn’t always.

In the past, she's struggled with noisy, unpredictable and disruptive environments where she felt unsettled, unable to focus, and as a result her confidence dipped and it wasn't easy for her to share her feelings.

But things changed when she came to Orpheus. Thanks to staff who made her feel listened to, helped her to recognise when anxiety was coming and find strategies like painting her nails.

For half our students, difficulty with sensory processing means the lights, the textures, the closeness of other people in an environment can literally feel like more than they can bear.

A sensory room with soft lights and gentle sounds is a place where the world dials down and they can reset. Ours is in desperate need of re-building.

Please donate if you can to help us re-build our sensory room, and read more about Lucy’s journey here - orpheus.org.uk/re-build-our-sensory-room
