Cold water shock can affect anyone - even strong swimmers, even on hot days.

• Warm weather doesn't mean warm water - open water stays dangerously cold.
• Cold water shock causes an involuntary gasp and loss of breathing control within seconds - even for strong swimmers.
• Even confident swimmers can quickly lose strength, control, and coordination. Panic makes it worse.

It doesn't take long for things to go wrong in open water - even for strong swimmers.

With warm weather forecast this weekend and into next week, more of us will enjoy spending time in, on, or around water, so it’s important to stay safe.

Almost half (47%) of UK accidental drownings happen between May and August, with higher risks during warmer weather.

Keep yourself and your family safe:
• Check for hazards, including depth, currents, tides, and hidden underwater objects.
• Stay together and swim in lifeguarded areas.

In an emergency:
• Call 999 immediately
• If you fall in or become tired, stay calm, float on your back, and call for help

Would you know what happens when you call 999 in an emergency❓

When you call 999 you’ll be put through to a BT operator who will as you what service you need - police, ambulance, fire or coastguard.

If you ask for the ambulance service, you’ll be connected to a call assessor in your local ambulance service control room. They will as you several important questions:

1️⃣ is the patient breathing?
2️⃣ is the patient conscious?
3️⃣ what is the reason for the call?
4️⃣ what’s the address of the emergency?
5️⃣ what number are you calling from?

It’s important to stay calm, listen to the questions & answer as best and as fully as you can. If you don’t understand or didn’t hear properly, say so & we’ll repeat or ask in a different way. Don’t worry, these questions don’t delay help at all. It’s gives us chance to provide important advice whilst the best help is being arranged for you.

If you’ve got children, why not teach them how to call 999 and get them to memorise your address and telephone number in case they ever need to call for help! You can find out more about what happens when you call 999 via ➡️ https://www.wmas.nhs.uk/services/urgent-and-emergency-care-999/what-happens-when-you-call-999/
