Old Richians Association

Old Richians Association We are determined to engage with Old Richians as never before and draw them in to an extended family of young people, staff, parents and governors.

The Old Richians Association invites all friends and former pupils of Sir Thomas Rich's School to become members and help to strengthen links between Richians old and new. Our new Richian Alumni Association aims to foster a sense of belonging among our former students and develop in them a lasting commitment to the School's success. We want Rich's to be an outward looking, dynamic centre of excell

ence that prepares young people to lead in a complex and challenging world. Our alumni have a vital role to play in this. We hope you will help us by supporting the School in all it does.

Four former students of Sir Thomas Rich's School completed the entire length of Hadrian's Wall last Saturday, covering all 70 miles in just over 14 hours!

Charlie Isaac, together with friends Chris Green, Ollie Booth and Scott Anderson, took on the remarkable challenge to raise money for a range of charities. The four friends, who started Sir Thomas Rich’s School in 2005, have remained close over the years and decided to undertake the demanding endurance run in support of causes that are important to them.

Charlie ran in aid of Prospect Hospice, where his younger brother Harvey, who has cerebral palsy, works. The team also raised funds for The Williams Syndrome Foundation, Prostate Cancer UK, The RAF Benevolent Fund and an MS charity.

Their achievement saw them complete one of the UK’s most iconic long-distance routes, demonstrating extraordinary determination and endurance while supporting a number of worthwhile charitable causes.

The Sir Thomas Rich's Jazz Band took to the free stage at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival on Saturday afternoon in Montpellier Gardens, with a fantastic performance of jazz pieces old and new. The polished presentation was the result of lots of hard work and rehearsals; a huge well done to Mr Hinton and all the talented musicians and vocalists who took part!

Old Richian Andy Frape (1979–1984) and his fellow metal detectorist John Ganley, an Old Cryptian, visited us this week to present an interesting historical find to Headteacher Matthew Lynch. The item was uncovered by John during a recent metal detecting outing and he has kindly donated it to the School. The find is a school uniform button bearing the inscription 'Sir Thomas Rich's Hospital.' Records show the word 'Hospital' was dropped from the school name in 1882, and based on its style and design, the button is likely from between 1820 and 1880. It could prove to be one of our oldest artefacts.

Andy (pictured on the left) and John (centre) are members of a local metal detecting club based in Taynton, near Newent, www.glevumdetecting.com. We are extremely grateful to them for this generous donation and are delighted to add the button to our archives.

🏉We marked 80 years of rugby at the school with a special celebration event on Saturday, bringing together pupils, alumni, parents and supporters for a full day of sport and fundraising in aid of the School Development Fund.

In the morning the school fields were alive with energy for House Rugby, and it was equally special to see alumni back in action for the touch rugby fixtures. The afternoon delivered a brilliant showcase of competitive rugby. The U17s secured a 12-7 victory over the U16s in a closely contested match. The 1st XV fixture against Hartpury College provided a thrilling finale, with STRS taking an impressive 36-26 win.

Off the pitch, the atmosphere was just as vibrant. With a steady flow of BBQ food, refreshments and conversation, the event felt like a true community celebration, bringing together pupils, parents, alumni and friends of the school in support of a shared cause.

All funds raised will support the School Development Fund, which plays a vital role in enabling sport at Sir Thomas Rich’s. With so many pupils taking part in fixtures such as rugby on a weekly basis, this level of opportunity simply wouldn’t be possible without that support. The generosity of alumni, parents and friends helps provide essential resources such as coaching, transport and equipment, ensuring pupils can continue to represent the school with pride.

The celebrations continued into the evening with a black-tie dinner and live music, providing the perfect finale to a memorable day. Mr Chris Carter, former Deputy Head, Old Richian and 1st XV Captain (1974–76), delivered the after-dinner speech. He was particularly pleased to be reunited with his 1975 teammate, Gareth Beamish. Chris said: “We hadn't seen each other for 50 years and shared some great memories. The power of rugby brought us back together.”

A huge thank you to everyone who attended, supported and contributed. It was a fitting tribute to 80 years of rugby – and a powerful reminder of the community that continues to make it all possible.

We were pleased and proud to host the regional finals of the European Youth Parliament this week, welcoming eight schools from across the region for a day of lively debate and discussion. Students tackled a range of challenging and topical issues, including the role of artificial intelligence in education, toxic masculinity, childhood hunger, asylum applications, and rising geopolitical tensions.

With the Sir Thomas Rich's Debate Society continuing to grow, two teams represented the School in this year’s competition, demonstrating the strength and enthusiasm of our student debaters. The event was further enriched by a visit from Alex McIntyre, MP for Gloucester, who joined discussions with students about the key issues affecting young people locally and nationally.

Alex was accompanied by his Parliamentary Assistant, Old Richian Joshua Littler-Jennings, making the occasion a welcome return for an alumnus supporting the next generation of student debaters.
