⭐ NATIONAL PLAY AWARDS FINALISTS ⭐

We are extremely excited to announce that our Young Volunteers have been shortlisted as finalists for Children's Play Personality of the Year at the inaugural National Play Awards, hosted by Play England

County-wide, this group of dedicated children and young people arrive at our play sessions and help create safe, brave spaces where they and their peers can benefit from all that outdoor play has to offer.

Director of Play, Ben, said:

"These amazing children and young people have turned their own experience of play into leadership, advocacy, action and employment. Being shortlisted in the inaugural National Play Awards is recognition of both them and our Young Volunteer Programme."
The inaugural National Play Awards celebrate the people, places and organisations creating better opportunities for children to play. Play England's Executive Director, Eugene Minogue, described the finalists as demonstrating "what progress towards restoring a play-based childhood can look like in practice."

A lot goes on behind the scenes to coordinate this scheme, with little to no external funding, so we are incredibly proud of and excited for the 40+ volunteers, aged between 10 and 16, who make it all possible.

Please cross your fingers, legs, toes, eyes and anything else you can, and wish our Young Volunteers the very best of luck ahead of the awards announcement!

Our first ever play session in Kingswood saw over 20 players enjoying their local green space with lots of playful games

Hundreds of bubbles were created and popped this evening, players found themselves enveloped by bubbles and loved it

With thanks to Kingswood Parish Council for funding these community play sessions

“Oh gosh! Shouldn’t you stop them?”

Rough and tumble is an important part of play. It teaches children where their limits are, develops their social skills by learning how to read body language, facial expressions and social cues.

There’s also trust and friendship built through playful physical interactions. Exploring risk, their own strengths and the difference between playful behaviour and genuine aggression.

Of course, our Play Rangers are always on hand to make sure everyone is safe, helping children to recognise and respect each other’s boundaries.

Moments like this are allowed to ‘play out’ (pun intended) and 9 times out of 10 end with belly laughs.

BACK TO COMMUNITY PLAY

For a small space it was buzzing when we came back to play in Archway Gardens last week.

With a total of 26 play visits from both children and adults, it was abundant in creativity.

They really enjoying the face painting box, becoming various beings like monsters, minions and animals!

Thanks to Stroud Town Council for their ongoing investment in play.

We’re back to community play this week, and here is our poster promoting where our sessions are during the week.

We can’t wait to see everyone.

A reminder that as a playwork charity we believe play belongs to the child.
..we will probably encourage your child to get messy.
..we care more about what children are doing than what the finished product looks like.
..we do not think every childhood experience needs a learning objective.
.we think adults interrupt play more often than we realise.
..we believe children are more capable than we often allow them to be.
..we are less interested in keeping children entertained and more interested in protecting their freedom to play.
..we believe children should have some parts of their lives that adults do not control.
..we believe play can be messy (and risky) without being careless.
..we are going to challenge the idea that a good childhood needs to be constantly productive.
..we are not here to give you a list of activities to keep children busy.
..we think children need opportunities to disagree, negotiate, adapt, and try again without an adult fixing everything.
..we think children deserve more real play and fewer performances of play for adults.
..we believe play does not need to look impressive to matter.
..we think the goal is not a perfect play space.
It is a child who feels free to use it.
..we think the best play materials are often the things adults were about to throw away.
..we believe children deserve communities where play is expected, supported and welcomed.
