This week is Deafness Awareness Week.

Books are for everyone, whether they are Hardback, Paperback, E Books, Large Print, Somewhere between, Read Along, Audio book or Braille. They inspire us and take us on our adventures where we can do anything!

If you can't see the format of book you are looking for (except E Books) in any of our shops please just ask as you never know what we might have and also pop along and support your local library and ask them as they might be able to get in what you are looking for.

Sadly our shop in Gloucester is now closed while we look for a new home.

If you see any local empty shops that look like they would be a good new home for a Free Bookshop please let us know as much as you can to help us find it, the address, what the shop was previously, if it has the estate agents name on it, any details will do.

Thank you ever so much for the time we have had at Gloucester, all of our volunteers and customers are amazing and we hope to return soon.

Book of the week
The Peppermint Tea Chronicles
Alexander McCall Smith

This book is number 13 in the adventures in life at Scotland Street - set in Edinburgh.

Bertie has now reached the age of 7! Luckily his mother is now pursuing research in Aberdeen - giving him a chance to play at last! All the characters move through another stage in their lives.

There are still a few more books in this series to read before I'm up to date. I look forward to reading these too and finding out what happens to all the people - especially Bertie, the baby triplets and the nun!

The book is written in a light and engaging style. As always for this series it was an enjoyable read.

Here is our first book of the week - The Flame Trees of Thika by Elspeth Huxley

I read this book a few years ago - it's about a little girl who went to East Africa with her parents when she was young - over 100 years ago.

The women did lots of hard work - carrying heavy loads and water in gourds and collecting firewood as well as looking after the children. The treatment of the wild and domestic animals was often cruel - the goats especially were cruelly sacrificed for various reasons.

What I most remember is the black warrior ants that marched in a long column - and this stream of ants could go on for days. They would swarm over living creatures in their way and eat into their soft parts, especially the eyes.

The book captures the atmosphere of Elspeth's time there - she hears the creatures moving about in the thatch roof and chameleons are kept as pets!

This copy in the Gloucester bookshop is beautifully illustrated and is a fascinating read.

Kind regards, Jenny Lane from the Gloucester Bookshop.
