Severn Wye Energy Agency

Severn Wye Energy Agency Severn Wye is a climate-action charity supporting individuals, businesses and communities across Wales and the English border counties.

We're changing the way people use energy โ€“ tackling the challenge of fuel poverty to meet the urgent need for warm healthy homes now, and acting on climate change by creating a low-carbon future thatโ€™s driven by clean energy. We work through the energy system to secure the basic human needs of warmth, good health, and a safe home now, and promote energy efficiency and low-carbon energy for the future.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Not sure where to start with your rental property's EPC rating?

Nick was in the same position. He knew the rules were changing โ€” all rented properties will need an EPC C or above โ€” but didn't know where to start, or who to trust.

Here's what we did:
โœ… an impartial survey of his property
โœ… clear recommendations, from small fixes to bigger investments
โœ… flexible solutions that worked for him (Nick started with loft insulation, a straightforward first step)
โœ… support for his tenants to access grant funding
No jargon. No pressure. Just honest advice from a team that knows the regulations inside out.

โ˜€๏ธ Keep cool this summer, without the energy bills to match.

As temperatures climb, here are some simple tips to keep your home comfortable:
๐ŸงŠ Freeze a water bottle and place it in front of a fan for an instant cool breeze
๐ŸชŸ Open your loft hatch to let hot air escape upwards and out of your living space
๐Ÿ  Check your insulation, it works both ways, keeping heat out in summer as well as in during winter
๐ŸŽฎ Switch off unused electronics, they all generate heat, even on standby

๐Ÿ’ก Together, we can Up the Energy

Energy shouldn't just be something that happens to communities, it should be something communities own.

The Up the Energy Crowdfunder is growing a movement for fairer, cleaner community energy across the UK. Your donation helps more communities take control of their energy, build local projects, and play a real part in the transition to net zero.

And right now, thanks to Aviva match funding, every pound you give is worth double. ๐Ÿ™Œ
Whether you can spare ยฃ10, ยฃ100, or just a share, it all makes a difference.

๐Ÿ’™ Sometimes the best thing we can do is just show up and not give up.

When Ruth, one of our energy advisers, met a young woman who had recently left care and was living alone for the first time, it was clear she was carrying a lot.
She was struggling with her mental health, finding paperwork overwhelming, and had built up nearly ยฃ1,000 of energy debt, with no payment plan in place and no bank account to even set one up.

Ruth got to work. She helped her switch to a cheaper tariff, applied to the British Gas Energy Trust to clear the debt, and showed her how to read her meter and manage her account online.
The difference it made went far beyond the bills.

๐Ÿ—จ๏ธ "She was very grateful for our support which has positively impacted her health and wellbeing. This has given her the confidence to try and get more issues sorted out so that she can manage her situation going forward."

Today she has an affordable payment plan and, for the first time since moving in, is paying regularly towards her energy use. Making steps to clear the debt gave her the breathing space to start focusing on other parts of her life. ๐Ÿ’™

If you or someone you know is struggling with energy debt or bills, please get in touch. Our support is completely free and confidential.

๐Ÿ’™ Energy bills are confusing enough, imagine dealing with them in a language that isn't your own.

We recently visited a lady who had discovered she may have been switched to a different energy supplier without her knowledge. Already navigating life in a new country with a language barrier, the uncertainty left her feeling completely overwhelmed and unsure who to trust.

During a home visit, we contacted both suppliers on her behalf to find out exactly what had happened, confirmed her original account had closed and arranged a final bill, and helped her switch to a new fixed tariff with lower monthly payments.

We also made sure she left the visit feeling fully informed about:
โœ… ways to reduce her energy use at home
โœ… the Priority Services Register
โœ… fire safety in the home
โœ… carbon monoxide awareness

By the end of the visit, she felt reassured, informed, and much more confident, not just about her bills, but about managing her home safely. ๐Ÿ’›

If you or someone you know is struggling to understand energy bills, has concerns about their supplier, or just doesn't know where to turn, please get in touch. Our support is completely free.
