We’re proud to introduce LandWise — Gloucestershire’s new brownfield survey project, made possible thanks to funding from the National Lottery Community Fund and the Summerfield Charitable Trust.

With increasing pressure to meet development targets, our countryside and green spaces are under threat. LandWise promotes a brownfield-first approach — encouraging development on previously used land before building on our valued countryside.

CPRE research shows there’s space for at least 1.41 million homes on brownfield land in England, yet much of it remains unused. At the same time, many local areas don’t have up-to-date records of brownfield sites.

🌱 That’s where LandWise comes in...

We’ll be working with local communities to identify overlooked sites across Gloucestershire — helping to protect the countryside by advocating for better use of existing land.

💚 Get involved
We’re looking for volunteers to share their local knowledge and support this exciting project. If you’d like to play a part, we’d love to hear from you..

🌿 It’s — the perfect moment to celebrate the success of our latest Hedgerow Heroes season and share our brand‑new project film 🎬

This winter, 160+ volunteers came together across nine sites, planting and restoring over 2km of hedgerow across Gloucestershire. With 708 volunteer hours logged, these efforts are already boosting wildlife, strengthening our countryside and building climate resilience 🦔🌱

Since 2023, we’ve now helped restore nearly 6km of hedgerow, supported by 400+ volunteers across the county — an incredible collective achievement 💚

Huge thanks to our amazing Hedgerow Heroes — volunteers, landowners, partners and supporters. We couldn’t do this without you!👏

🏡 Housing targets vs local needs

We recognise the need for more homes – especially genuinely affordable homes in rural areas. But the Government’s housing targets are putting huge pressure on local authorities and countryside communities.

In Cotswold District alone, the new requirement is 1,036 homes per year – more than double the current plan. With much of the area protected as part of the Cotswolds National Landscape, this has left villages like Mickleton vulnerable to speculative development.

A local group, Mickleton Against Inappropriate Development (MAID), have launched a nationwide petition calling for a pause on these targets and meaningful consultation with communities.

📣 10,000 signatures are needed to trigger a government response.

If you value our countryside and locally appropriate development, please consider signing MAID's petition:
