🚨 Data centres risk a land crisis like never before.

And the current rush to build them is largely being driven by the race to build AI capacity. The government's own projections expect AI to make up around 70% of UK data centre capacity by 2035.

AI could help us with some of our biggest challenges, but amidst a climate, nature and housing crisis, massive, energy- and water-hungry developments need scrutiny, not a free pass.

We're working with our CPRE groups across England to sound the alarm and call for a proper plan for data centres.

📢 PLANNING UPDATE from our Forest of Dean District Committee

We've recently submitted objections to two planning applications in the Forest of Dean. Swipe to see our concerns for the countryside and why we've recommended these applications be refused. 👉

📍 In Dymock, our concerns include the site's location outside the settlement boundary and Local and Neighbourhood Plans, the unnecessary loss of countryside land, conflict with planning policy, and the fact that alternative housing provision is already being considered. We also believe key archaeological and other issues remain unresolved.

📍 In Woolaston, we remain concerned about the impact of a proposed tourism development on the rural landscape, including views from the Gloucestershire Way and local footpaths, the loss of hedgerows, and conflict with planning policies designed to protect the countryside and promote sustainable development.

We support new homes and rural tourism in the right places, but development must be in line with planning policy, protect the countryside, and be genuinely sustainable. 🌱

We are delighted to be celebrating the 19th year of the CPRE Gloucestershire Awards, recognising the inspiring projects and dedicated individuals making a lasting difference to Gloucestershire’s countryside, environment and communities.

This year, we will gather at The Gillyflower at Elmore Estate, a beautifully sustainable venue and proud previous recipient of a CPRE Gloucestershire Award, to celebrate our 2026 Award recipients and their outstanding achievements.

We are also honoured to introduce the Richard Lloyd Countryside Champion Award for the very first time. Established in memory of our much-missed Vice Chair, Richard Lloyd MBE, this special award will recognise an individual who has made an exceptional contribution to Gloucestershire’s countryside and natural environment.

20 metres restored. New skills learnt. A great day in Gloucestershire's countryside! 🌱💚

Our Hedgerow Heroes Project got off to a fantastic start yesterday with our first hedge laying training day of the season, led by an expert trainer alongside our friends at Sapperton Wilder.

From trimming and preparing the hedge to laying stems, installing stakes and weaving binders, our Hedgerow Heroes got stuck into every stage of this traditional countryside craft, helping create a stronger, healthier hedgerow for wildlife and our countryside. 🦔

We're delighted to welcome Patricia back to CPRE Gloucestershire in her new role as Vice President! ⭐️

Following the completion of her term as Chair in June, Patricia passed the baton to our new Chair, Simon Murray, after many years of exceptional leadership, dedication, and service to the charity.

We're thrilled that our Board has now elected Patricia as one of our Vice Presidents. Her contribution as Chair has been invaluable, and we're delighted that she will continue to support our work, champion our mission, and act as a ambassador for Gloucestershire's countryside in this special new role!

Nearly 40% of local authorities don't have an up-to-date brownfield register. 🏡

Brownfield sites, such as vacant offices, former commercial premises and disused industrial land, could provide space for new homes while helping to protect Gloucestershire's countryside and green spaces. Yet when registers are out of date, suitable sites can be overlooked and pressure can shift onto greenfield land instead.

That's why we're working to build a more complete picture of brownfield land across Gloucestershire through LandWise - our Brownfield Land Project.

By gathering local knowledge and identifying overlooked sites, we're helping make the case for a brownfield-first approach to development, delivering much-needed homes while safeguarding Gloucestershire's countryside.
