Cheltenham Science Festival BSL Interpreted Talk

What makes us who we are? Friendship, family, love – or something more?

Neurologist Masud Husain shares how our brains shape our sense of self, in conversation with broadcaster Claudia Hammond.

Through powerful human stories, Masud reveals how changes to memory, language, motivation and empathy can change identity and, in some cases, restore it. Through people who lose words, stop caring what others think, or misinterpret their closest relationships, Masud illuminates the workings of the brain and shows how modern neuroscience is reshaping our understanding of illness and what it truly means to be human.

There will be a book signing after this event. Cheltenham Festivals

Action Deafness and Gloucestershire Deaf Association (GDA) are pleased to announce the formal integration of GDA into the Action Deafness family.

This integration safeguards local Deaf, Hard of Hearing and Deafblind services in Gloucestershire while strengthening governance, financial resilience, and long-term sustainability under Deaf-led leadership.

GDA’s heritage, community relationships, and trusted local presence will be preserved and supported through Action Deafness’s infrastructure and strategic capacity.

Alison Lewis, Chair of Action Deafness Board of Trustees, said: “This integration is about solidarity within our sector. Deaf-led organisations are strongest when we collaborate. Our commitment is clear - protect local identity, strengthen governance, and build long-term resilience so our communities continue to thrive.”

Sam Stocken, Trustee of GDA Board, added: “Our Board has carefully considered this decision. We believe this integration protects services, supports leadership and staff teams, and reinforces strong Deaf-led governance for the future.”

Further information regarding community engagement sessions and transition arrangements will follow.

GDA is delighted to announce a new partnership with Action Deafness - a fellow deaf-led charity.

This partnership is an important step in strengthening the long-term sustainability of our services and supporting more deaf, deafblind and hard of hearing people across Gloucestershire.

GDA will continue delivering services from our current centre, with support, clinics and events continuing as planned. For people accessing our services, it remains very much 'business as usual'.
