Our monthly online talk is taking place in a week’s time!

The talk, titled "They Don't Make 'em Like They Used To", will be delivered online via Microsoft Teams. It will take place from 1-2pm on Wednesday 24th June 2026.

For this Secrets Revealed Online Talk, we will be looking into Gloucestershire’s varied history of manufacturing.

In the past, Gloucestershire boasted a wonderfully wide range of manufacturing from large industries through to small artisanal cottage industry concerns. This talk will look at both ends of this scale through surviving records held at the archives. By default, most will be from the larger concerns whose records tend to survive, but there are a few items from the smaller ones and, perhaps, a couple of unexpected things.

When you book to attend, we will email you a Teams link to access the talk. You can book your place on our website here: https://orlo.uk/2lZzX

We look forward to seeing you there!

Once more it’s , where every Tuesday we share one of the many unique, rare and intriguing items we care for at Gloucestershire Archives.

This week, we have a hand-painted poster from the early 1940s promoting an aid concert in Dursley, Gloucestershire (document reference number: D5425/36/6).

This large poster describes a ‘Tricolour Variety Concert’ held in aid of Fighting French Airmen. The concert took place in Lister Hall, a traditional theatre and dance hall.

The poster contains detailed illustrations, including a meticulously painted aircraft.

A 1943 Citizen article described how this concert was attended by Princess Marie Louise—granddaughter of Queen Victoria—and that numerous choirs, soloists, and an R.A.F. band provided the musical entertainment.

Twyning - continued

A short distance from The Fleet Inn, Chad's Well can be found.

History reports that 'the local people used it as drinking water because of its coolness and clearness (sic)', 'the water is very pure cold and good for the eyes' and 'its water was beneficial to the eyes'.
