Callout - Thursday 11th June

The team were called late afternoon on Thursday. 2 people were attempting to follow a route up one of the cloughs on the North Edge of Bleaklow.
Unfortunately the volume of rain that has been falling recently meant the stream was in spate and they found themselves cragfast, unable to ascend to the top, or descend to get back to where they came from.
The team were able to get to their location within a short time. However, when considering the ferocity of the water, the physical and mental state of the walkers and the challenging nature of the terrain, a simple walk in and out would have carried considerable risk. A rope system was set up to extract the walkers from the depths of the clough, and the walkers were escorted back off the hill.
Once back at base the 300m+ of wet rigging and hauling rope, rigging tackle etc was set out to dry, and the team stood down a little after 9pm.

**Callout – Saturday 30 May**

**Warning: Graphic image included**

The team was called to assist a walker who had suffered a fall in the Lower Ashop area and was unable to continue. On arrival, we found the casualty had sustained a lateral dislocation of the left patella (kneecap).

Following a full assessment and the administration of pain relief, the team's Remote Rescue Medical Technicians (a qualification held by many of our members) successfully reduced the patella. The casualty was then placed in a splint and carried by stretcher to the roadside where the casualty was transferred to East Midlands ambulance service for further medical care.

This incident is a reminder of why we are here. Even seemingly minor slips, trips, and falls in the countryside can result in injuries that require specialist medical assistance and evacuation.

And for those who want to see what a dislocated patella looks like, scroll through the photos at your own risk!

Wednesday shout out! 👏🚑

On Monday we were called to an incident in the Middle Black Waterfall area (see our previous post for details), and we’d like to recognise the kindness and support shown by members of the public during the response.

Firstly, thank you to the informant who called in from an area with phone signal and stayed in contact to support the response.

Secondly, a huge thank you to these three lads, who offered to help carry kit and our stretcher over steep terrain in some very warm conditions — conditions we’re definitely not acclimatised to! ☀️⛰️

Support like this really does make a difference, and it’s always appreciated when people are willing to lend a hand to help someone in need.

Thank you all!

*Callouts – a busy weekend…* 🚑⛰️

It’s been a busy 48 hours for the team, with five callouts over the weekend keeping our volunteers on their toes.

On Sunday, the team assisted a lone walker attempting the Pennine Way who had become benighted on Clough Edge. Thankfully, the walker was well equipped and able to look after themselves while awaiting assistance. A small team located the walker and returned them safely to their waiting family.

Early on Monday afternoon we were tasked by NWAS to assist a casualty who had taken a fall near one of the waterfalls in the Blacks area. Finding the casualty proved challenging, but with help from the informant we located them in Near Black Clough.

Initial reports suggested a potentially serious fall, prompting a significant response including Helimed, multiple NWAS resources, and support from Woodhead Mountain Rescue Team for a possible stretcher evacuation.

Following assessment, it was decided the safest option was a careful assisted walk off. The casualty was transferred to a waiting ambulance and taken to hospital – we wish them a speedy recovery.

Later in the day we supported Edale MRT at two separate incidents:

* Assisting with a stretcher carry for a casualty with an ankle injury from Bamford Edge
* Helping retrieve a casualty from the Slippery Stones area and transporting them to an ambulance

The team finally stood down at 22:00 hrs… only to be called out again at 02:00 when a group of walkers reported themselves lost. Thankfully, with guidance over the phone, they were able to safely return to their vehicle.

A busy weekend highlights how quickly plans can change in the hills. Please make sure you’re well prepared, carry the right kit, and know your route before heading out.

Stay safe, and thank you to all partner agencies for their support. 🙏

Callout - Wednesday 20th May

In the early hours of this morning, the team was called out to assist in locating an 81-year-old walker who had set off from near the Snake Inn earlier in the day to walk along the edges.
Concern was raised when he had not returned home, and we were alerted by police at 2am following a call from his wife.

Importantly, this walker had taken excellent precautions before setting out. He was well equipped for the conditions, carrying appropriate clothing, food, drink, and a map. He had also left a detailed route plan with his wife, including grid references, and maintained clear communication about his intentions.
This high level of preparation — along with the detailed information passed to us — greatly assisted the team in quickly identifying priority search areas.
While returning to his vehicle, his torch unfortunately failed, leaving him benighted and unable to continue safely in the dark.

Thanks to his preparation and the clear information available, the team was able to locate him quickly. He was found safe and well.
This incident highlights just how important it is to plan thoroughly, carry suitable equipment, and let someone know your route before heading out.

Thanks also to Kinder Mountain Rescue Teamand Buxton Mountain Rescue Team’s drone for going on standby just in case this became a bigger search.

Our new and very enthusiastic runners Emma, Duncan, and Antonio are taking on the Mountain Rescue South Challenge (108 miles - some of the team think they’re a little crazy) and raising funds for our team, Glossop Mountain Rescue.
We’re all volunteers and the work we do is all about rescuing people on the hills and in difficult conditions.
If you’re able to support us, even a small donation would mean a lot and go a long way 🙏

Callout - Sunday 10th May

The team were called to a lower leg injury in Middle Black clough.
The team mobilised quickly and sent our closest member to the scene direct from home to assess the injury; the rest of the team arrived shortly after and stretchered the casualty to the waiting ambulance.

We wish the casualty a speedy recovery

A reminder that access is needed at all times to the entrance to Middle Black area and not to block the barrier just off A628 Woodhead. This is for both emergency services and the farm residents

Callout - Saturday 9th into Sunday 10th May

Late on Saturday night the team were called out to a nightbound walker. The call came through 999 and a location was given before the phone battery died.
Considering the bitter Northerly wind, the lack of visibility on the tops and the complete lack of communication with the casualty, the team mobilized, working with a pincer movement in order to contain the location and try to ensure we didn't miss them.

Team members progressed onto the hill with kit ready to deal with cold walkers, but as the first group reached the last known location, there was no one there.
A search of the immediate area was instigated through some significantly steep ground and from there across the moor.
As midnight approached, we called for a dog handler and were about to raise other teams when finally, the phone number started ringing instead of going direct to voicemail.
Thankfully the person picked up and confirmed they were safe at home, and had been for some time

The team returned to base, getting home at about 2am.

We have no problem going out to callouts in the middle of the night. We have no problem with people calling us when they are worried and lost.
However, if you do manage to self rescue, please please do recall 999 to let them, and us know you are safe.

Last night the team took part in some outdoor rope training with the focus on anchors; this meant anchoring to trees, rocks, and 6 people as a body belay anchor. All aspects of setting up our rope system anchors in “mock rescue” real time.
We believe it was such a great experience that our neighbours decided to join in and decide if they wanted to be probationary members… sadly they thought it best that they moooooooved on and just sporadically taste test the nearby grass and assess the set ups!

A great night out training!
