Happy Days, in the summer of 2019. This was the last year that Friends of Chernobyl's Children in Monmouthshire were able to bring children for a recuperative holiday, and they were enjoying a few days on the Gower Peninsula. This FoCC charity has reluctanlty decided that it has to close, and we are very grateful that they have passed their remaining funds on to us to help us to continue supporting children, families and young disabled people in Belarus.

40 years ago today the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded, heavily contaminating southern Belarus and northern Ukraine and spreading fallout all across Europe and beyond. Today we remember the brave men whose actions prevented a much worse disaster; the hundreds of thousands of liquidators who were involved in trying to clean territory after the accident; the people who were permanently evacuated from 2,000 towns and villages; everyone who has died from cancer or heart disease as a result of ingesting radioactive food and breathing contaminated air; and all those who have suffered disability or ill health because of Chernobyl.
The caesium 137 and strontium 90 which escaped from the reactor have half lives of around 30 years. So they have now decayed to less than half their original strenth, but it will be 100 years before they become insignificant. And where Plutonium land in Belarus it will be there virtually forever.
So don't forget the people who continue to live on contaminated land, and resolve to help create a safer future for all of us without nuclear power which can bring about such devastation.

Whilst we can't bring children to the UK for recuperative holidays, we will be able to provide some holidays in Belarus this year for young adults with disabilities, and for some children in remission from cancer. Thank you so much to Friends of Chernobyl Children Herts and Cambs for entrusting us with your final funds, which will make these holidays possible.

Our partners in Minsk, Children in Trouble, always do what they can to help brighten the lives of children in the Cancer Hospital at Christmas. We are glad that, although we can no longer bring children for holidays in the UK, we can still help with such support.

So proud of Sveta who has been organising her annual Christmas visits to some of the institutions in Gomel Region. Every year she gathers up some of the volunteers who work with her to rescue and find homes for cats and dogs, and they take some of the animals with them to the homes. I will put some posts on to follow this of the videos they made of the visits this year. Sveta lived for a number of years at our Family Home Klimovka and worked at the Mayflower Centre. it was always clear that love of animals was what motivated her most, but she is also wonderful at bringing some cheer to the lives of people who don't have families to support them. The last pictures are of Sveta at a recent TV interview. She is well know in Gomel for all her media appearances on behalf of the 'Give them a chance' campaign.
