Today in Glasgow we witnessed the unveiling of the new Nelson Mandela statue. ✊🏽

A powerful reminder of the enduring bonds of solidarity between South Africa, Glasgow and Cuba. 🇿🇦🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🇨🇺

Mandela’s legacy shows what people can achieve when they organise, stand together and demand change. As we celebrate past victories, we also recognise the struggles for justice that continue today.

Join us for a morning of film and discussion exploring land, language and literacy from Latin America to Gaelic Scotland in partnership with Havana Glasgow Film Festival. 🇨🇺

We're proud to be screening three powerful films: My First Calling from Cuba, Clay Woman from Mexico and CEARTAS from Scotland. With attention to how language shapes the land, and the land shapes language, our panel will discuss the intersections between Spanish, Gaelic and indigenous American languages, and the ways they are presented in film and our cultures more broadly.

🗣️ Followed by a Q&A with Helen Yaffe, Professor of Latin American Political Economy at the University of Glasgow and Dani Acosta, Cuban Glasgow-based filmmaker.

On 14 September we gathered at ARC Glasgow for Literacy, Language and Land — a programme exploring how language, identity and place shape our stories. This reel captures the atmosphere and the thoughtful responses from our audience.

We extend our thanks to ARC Glasgow for their partnership, to for beautifully documenting the event, and to volunteers Amy Reid and Kate Hurly for their filming support.
