Youth Climate Action Worker
Organisation: East Dunbartonshire Climate Action Hub (EDCAH)
Position: Part-Time Youth Climate Action Worker Hours: 12 hours per week – 2 x 6-hour shifts Contract: Fixed term until March 31st 2027. (Continuation funding TBC)
Salary: £13.50 per hour
Location: East Dunbartonshire, with community and school-based delivery
Responsible to: East Dunbartonshire Climate Action Hub Manager.
About East Dunbartonshire Climate Action Hub
East Dunbartonshire Climate Action Hub (EDCAH) supports communities across East Dunbartonshire to take positive action on climate change, sustainability, nature and the environment.
We work alongside local people and community organisations to develop practical projects, increase environmental awareness and create opportunities for people of all ages to take action in their communities.
The Role
We are looking for an enthusiastic and creative Youth Climate Action Worker to help us develop and deliver our growing program of climate and environmental activities for children and young people from nursery age through to 21 years old.
This is an exciting opportunity for someone who enjoys working with young people and is passionate about climate action, nature and community development.
A key part of the role will be co-creating the development of EDCAH's youth climate action program. Working alongside young people, schools, community groups and partners, you will help identify what young people want to learn about, get involved in and change within their communities.
The successful applicant will also support the development and delivery of climate action projects within primary schools, youth groups and community settings.
Key Responsibilities
Youth Engagement and Participation
• Engage with children and young people aged from nursery to 21 years.
• Build positive, respectful and supportive relationships with young people.
• Create opportunities for young people to share their ideas, interests and concerns around climate change and the environment.
• Support young people to take an active role in shaping EDCAH's youth program.
• Develop opportunities for young people to progress from participation to taking action within their communities.
• Encourage young people to develop confidence, skills and leadership through climate action.
Climate Action and Environmental Projects
• Develop and deliver engaging climate, nature and sustainability activities for children and young people.
• Work with primary schools to develop and deliver practical Climate Action projects.
• Support youth groups and community organisations to undertake environmental projects.
• Develop activities around themes such as climate change, biodiversity, nature, waste reduction, sustainable travel, food, energy and community action.
• Encourage practical, positive and achievable action rather than focusing solely on climate awareness.
• Help young people understand how local action can contribute to wider environmental change.
Planning and Delivery
• Develop creative and age-appropriate session plans and activity programmes.
• Prepare resources and materials for sessions.
• Deliver engaging workshops, outdoor activities and practical projects.
• Adapt activities to meet the needs, abilities and interests of different age groups.
• Support the delivery of youth events, community activities and environmental campaigns.
• Work flexibly across different community locations and settings.
Youth Scotland Awards
• Support young people to participate in appropriate Youth Scotland Awards, including awards such as Hi5 and Dynamic Youth.
• Plan activities that allow young people to develop evidence and demonstrate their learning, participation and achievements.
• Support young people to reflect on their experiences and identify their own achievements.
• Maintain appropriate records and evidence of award progress.
Monitoring and Outcomes
• Record participation, activities and outcomes in accordance with EDCAH procedures.
• Collect feedback from children, young people, schools and community partners.
• Capture evidence of learning, participation, skills development and environmental action.
• Contribute to monitoring and evaluation reports for funders and partners.
• Use young people's feedback to continually improve the program.
Partnership Working
• Develop positive working relationships with primary schools, youth organisations, community groups and other partners.
• Represent EDCAH positively within schools and community settings.
• Work alongside colleagues and partner organisations to identify opportunities for collaborative youth climate action.
• Support wider EDCAH events, campaigns and activities where appropriate.
Safeguarding and Professional Responsibilities
• Follow EDCAH's safeguarding, child protection, health and safety, equality and confidentiality policies.
• Promote an inclusive environment where every child and young person feels welcome, respected and able to participate.
• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries when working with children and young people.
• Complete relevant records and reporting within required timescales.
• Attend relevant meetings, training and supervision sessions.
Person Specification
Essential
• Experience of working with children and/or young people.
• Ability to build positive relationships with young people.
• Ability to plan and deliver engaging activities and sessions.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Ability to work creatively and adapt activities to different age groups.
• Commitment to equality, inclusion and meaningful youth participation.
• Interest in climate change, nature, sustainability and/or environmental issues.
• Ability to record participation, outcomes and evidence of activities.
• Full driving license and ability to travel to different locations across East Dunbartonshire.
• Willingness to undertake relevant safeguarding and other training.
Desirable
• Previous experience of youth work.
• Relevant youth work, community development, education or environmental qualification.
• Experience of working within schools.
• Experience of delivering environmental or climate action projects.
• Experience of Youth Scotland Awards or similar youth achievement programs.
• Experience of working with community groups.
• Experience of co-production or participatory approaches with children and young people.
• Knowledge of local communities across East Dunbartonshire.
