Great news for Garnethill! 🎉 The Oxford Fish and Chips has been named a finalist in three categories at this year’s Scottish Fish and Chip Awards:

🏆 Best Fish Supper in the West
🏆 Best Restaurant
🏆 Best Chip Shop in the West

The Oxford is among 10 Glasgow chippies shortlisted across a range of categories, celebrating the quality, service and local businesses that make Scotland’s fish and chip scene so special.

📅 The winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 9 November.

🚧 HILL STREET SINKHOLE – REPAIR UPDATE

Scottish Water contractors have arrived this morning to begin work on the sinkhole at Hill Street, where it crosses Scott Street.

The sinkhole has been caused by a collapsed sewer, meaning a section of the sewer needs to be completely replaced. Scottish Water currently expects the repair works to take approximately 2–3 weeks.

Current road arrangements:

- 🚫 Hill Street is closed from Dalhousie Street up to No. 83 Hill Street.
- 🚧 Cones are currently in place at Dalhousie Street, with that section closed to traffic.
- 🚗 Scott Street is also closed at the moment.
- Renfrew St is open at Hill St Cross
- The Council and contractors are reviewing the traffic arrangements, including the impact on the one-way system, so these may change.

👧 St Aloysius School drop-offs:
Parents/carers dropping children at St Aloysius will currently need to drop off outside the affected road-closure area and walk the remaining distance to the school.

We’ll share further updates as the road and traffic arrangements become clearer.

🕯️ Remembrance Day – Road Restrictions

Glasgow City Council has advised of temporary road closures and parking/loading restrictions around George Square for Remembrance Day events.

📅 Sunday 8 November 2026

🚧 Vehicle restrictions – 4am to 4pm

Vehicle movements will be prohibited on:

• Anchor Lane
• Cochrane Street
• Dundas Lane
• Dundas Street – between West George Street and Dundas Lane
• George Square – all sides
• George Street – between George Square and High Street
• John Street
• Martha Street
• Montrose Street – between Cathedral Street and Ingram Street
• Nelson Mandela Place
• North Frederick Street
• North Hanover Street – between George Square and Cathedral Street
• South Frederick Street
• Shuttle Street
• West George Street – between West Nile Street and George Square
• North Portland Street – between Richmond Street and George Street

Access to the NCP car park on Montrose Street will be maintained.

🚫 Waiting, loading and unloading – 3pm 7 November to 4pm 8 November

These restrictions apply to the relevant streets listed above, plus Hanover Street for its whole length.

🚌 Bus lane regulations suspended – 4am to 4pm on 8 November

Bus lane regulations will be suspended on:

• North Hanover Street – between George Square and Cathedral Street
• West George Street – between West Nile Street and Nelson Mandela Place
• George Square – between Cochrane Street and South Frederick Street

The restrictions are being introduced for the safety of the Remembrance Day event and other road users.

Please allow extra time for journeys and consider alternative routes when travelling through the city centre.

🚗 Pavement parking – 68 Buccleuch Street

We’ve received an update from Councillor Angus Millar regarding concerns about vehicles parking on the pavement at 68 Buccleuch Street.

The Council’s Parking Enforcement Team has now been made aware of the issue, and Parking Attendants have been asked to pay particular attention to the area when they are deployed there.

Where vehicles are found to be parked in contravention of the legislation, a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) will be issued.

This is particularly important for pedestrians, wheelchair users and people with pushchairs, who can be forced into the road when pavements are blocked.

Thank you to residents who raised the issue, and to Councillor Millar for pursuing it with the Council.

📍 Mackintosh Tearooms – update on proposed v**e shop

Garnethill Community Council has received an update from local councillors Angus Millar and Eva Bolander following our concerns about the proposed v**e shop at 215–217 Sauchiehall Street, immediately beside the Category A-listed Mackintosh Tearooms.

The key points are:

🔹 The Council cannot currently prevent a shop from selling v**es where the premises already has planning permission for use as a shop. There is currently no planning or licensing system that allows the Council to control where v**es can be sold.

🔹 The Council is seeking greater powers to regulate where v**es and products containing lithium-ion batteries can be sold or stored. This could potentially include changes to planning law or a licensing system.

🔹 The shopfront and signage are a different matter. Planning officers have advised that the alterations require listed building consent and advertising consent, and that no such consents have been applied for.

🔹 As a result, a formal Planning Enforcement process is due to commence. This will allow the impact of the shopfront on the Mackintosh Tearooms and the surrounding heritage area to be considered.

🔹 The National Trust for Scotland has been engaged with Planning regarding the matter.

We are grateful to Councillors Millar and Bolander for raising our concerns and pursuing this with Council officers.

We will continue to follow the enforcement process and seek further information about the protection of the Mackintosh Tearooms and the wider Sauchiehall Street Conservation Area.

Councillor Millar has also agreed to seek further information on potential changes to national legislation governing v**e shops.

We’ll keep residents updated as more information becomes available.

Info: Hill Street Sink Hole:

Scottish water has informed the community council that they are carrying out emergency repairs to a collapsed sewer on Hill Street, Glasgow.
As a result, Scott Street is closed at Renfrew Street and Hill Street at the junction of Dalhousie Street.
Diversion is via Renfrew Street - Cambridge Street - Hill Street - Rose Street - Buccleuch Street - Garnethill Street. Diversion signage is in place.
Due to the complex nature of repairs, they are unable to confirm timescales at this time. However, as soon as more information becomes available, they will update.
