Orthodox Community of the Archangel Gabriel, Glasgow

Orthodox Community of the Archangel Gabriel, Glasgow An Orthodox chapel in Glasgow established in 2015. A registered Scottish charity. Charity number SC047220

Our priest, Father Augustine (a native of Glasgow), was given a blessing by Archbishop Job of Telmessos to found a small community in the centre of the university neighbourhood, to be a place of worship for Orthodox believers and enquirers from all backgrounds. We have seen a desperate need in Glasgow for the message of the good news of Jesus Christ, contained in its fullness in the Orthodox Church, and our community hopes to begin to fulfil this need by celebrating our beautiful liturgical services in English, and by being available to teach, preach, give spiritual support, and visit the sick. The community was kindly provided with a crypt room underneath the Wellington Church, University Avenue, by the Church of Scotland, in 2013. This room has been converted by the hard work of Fr Augustine and helpers. We are grateful to the community of Wellington Church for their continued hospitality and warmly welcome all to the Divine Liturgy.

Dear All,

I am very sorry to have to announce a change to the service schedule this weekend. Bishop Augustine has been called away at the last minute and he has been unable to secure cover of a priest for Divine Liturgy. We were very fortunate to have Fr Jacob and Fr Theophan visit us in the last month and Bishop Augustine is working on adding to the pool of available priests who will be able to offer additional cover. He is very sorry for the disruption but thankful and relying upon your support and prayers. We have a wonderful and growing community. Please continue to support each other and forbear each other!

On Saturday there will be matins and prayers in Wellington at 10am as usual with Br Basil. Coffee and everything as usual. Please join him. We have been blessed to receive a wonderful 8ft tall Mosaic of St Theneva - Br Basil will say some special prayers and share the story with you.

On Sunday there will be the celebration of the Typika service in Charlotte Street at 10am as usual. The Typika is led by the laity and mirrors the first part of the Divine Liturgy. It is said or sung on days when a priest is unavailable to serve. It developed historically as an ancient monastic practice where monks who could not attend a full liturgy would gather to pray the “typical” psalms and readings. Again, please join Brother Basil for this Sunday service and of course usual fellowship and gym etc to follow.

If anyone would prefer to attend a Divine Liturgy at one of our neighbouring parishes the details are posted here:

Dear all,

On Thursday 8th October we will celebrate Divine Liturgy at 10am (at Kelvin West Parish Church) for the feast of Venerable Pelagia the Penitent - we cant wait to see you!

Saint Pelagia the Penitent was converted to Christianity by Saint Nonnus, Bishop of Edessa (Saturday of Cheesefare Week). Before her acceptance of Christianity through Baptism, Pelagia was head of a dance troupe in Palestinian Antioch, living a life of frivolity and prostitution.

One day Pelagia, elegantly dressed, was making her way past a church where Saint Nonnus was preaching a sermon. Believers turned their faces away from the sinner, but the bishop glanced after her. Struck by the outer beauty of Pelagia and having foreseen the spiritual greatness within her, the saint prayed in his cell for a long time to the Lord for the sinner. He told his fellow bishops that the pr******te put them all to shame. He explained that she took great care to adorn her body in order to appear beautiful in the eyes of men. “We... take no thought for the adornment of our wretched souls,” he said.

Dear all,

On Tuesday 6th October we will celebrate Divine Liturgy at 10am (at Kelvin West Parish Church) for the feast of Holy, Glorious Apostle Thomas - please join us!

The Holy and Glorious Apostle Thomas was born in the Galilean city of Pansada and was a fisherman. Hearing the good tidings of Jesus Christ, he left all and followed after Him. The Apostle Thomas is included in the number of the holy Twelve Apostles of the Savior.

According to Holy Scripture, the holy Apostle Thomas did not believe the reports of the other disciples about the Resurrection of Jesus Christ: “Unless I see in His hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into His side, I will not believe” (John 20:25).

On the eighth day after the Resurrection, the Lord appeared to the Apostle Thomas and showed him His wounds. “My Lord and my God,” the Apostle cried out (John 20:28). “Thomas, being once weaker in faith than the other apostles,” says Saint John Chrysostom, “toiled through the grace of God more bravely, more zealously and tirelessly than them all, so that he went preaching over nearly all the earth, not fearing to proclaim the Word of God to savage nations.”

Some icons depicting this event are inscribed “The Doubting Thomas.” This is incorrect. In Greek, the inscription reads, “The Touching of Thomas.” In Slavonic, it says, “The Belief of Thomas.” When Saint Thomas touched the Life-giving side of the Lord, he no longer had any doubts.

On Sunday we commemorate Venerable Paul the Simple of Egypt.

Saint Paul the Simple of Egypt also lived in the fourth century and was called the Simple for his simplicity of heart and gentleness. He had been married, but when he discovered his wife’s infidelity, he left her and went into the desert to Saint Anthony the Great (January 17). Paul was already 60 years old, and at first Saint Anthony would not accept Paul, saying that he was unfit for the harshness of the hermit’s life. Paul stood outside the cell of the ascetic for three days, saying that he would sooner die than go from there. Then Saint Anthony took Paul into his cell, and tested his endurance and humility by hard work, severe fasting, with nightly vigils, constant singing of Psalms and prostrations. Finally, Saint Anthony decided to settle Paul into a separate cell.

During the many years of ascetic exploits the Lord granted Saint Paul both discernment, and the power to cast out demons. When they brought a possessed youth to Saint Anthony, he guided the afflicted one to Saint Paul saying, “I cannot help the boy, for I have not received power over the Prince of the demons. Paul the Simple, however, does have this gift.” Saint Paul expelled the demon by his simplicity and humility.

On Saturday we commemorate Hieromartyr Dionysius the Areopagite, Bishop of Athens.

Saint Dionysius lived originally in the city of Athens. He was raised there and received a classical Greek education. He then went to Egypt, where he studied astronomy at the city of Heliopolis. It was in Heliopolis, along with his friend Apollophonos where he witnessed the solar eclipse that occurred at the moment of the death of the Lord Jesus Christ by Crucifixion. “Either the Creator of all the world now suffers, or this visible world is coming to an end,” Dionysius said. Upon his return to Athens from Egypt, he was chosen to be a member of the Areopagus Council (Athenian high court).

When the holy Apostle Paul preached at the place on the Hill of Ares (Acts 17:16-34), Dionysius accepted his salvific proclamation and became a Christian. For three years Saint Dionysius remained a companion of the holy Apostle Paul in preaching the Word of God. Later on, the Apostle Paul selected him as bishop of the city of Athens. And in the year 57 Saint Dionysius was present at the repose of the Most Holy Theotokos.

Dear all,

Now that it's been confirmed that there will be a liturgy on Sunday 4th of October at Charlotte St, we'd like to announce that the next Sunday School is taking place then!

As before, it will take place about 20 minutes after the Divine Liturgy, so that parents can have a coffee.

This week we will be looking at the story of Noah's Ark and its prefigurement of the Church. We will read the story, play some games, do some crafts, and most importantly have fun!

All children are welcome and parents can join if they wish.

We'd like to encourage all those who want their children to participate to *join the designated Sunday School community page in this WhatsApp group*. We will post all the information about upcoming Sunday School classes there, as well as useful resources parents can use at home.

In Christ,
Ruth and Ilja

Dear all,

On Tuesday 29th September we will celebrate Divine Liturgy at 10am (at Kelvin West Parish Church) for the feast of Venerable Kyriakos the Anchorite - please join us!

Saint Kyriakos (Kyriákos)1 was born in the Greek city of Corinth to the priest John and his wife Eudokίa. Bishop Peter of Corinth, who was a family relative, seeing that Kyriakos was a quiet and sensible child, made him a Reader in church. His constant reading of the Holy Scriptures awakened in him a love for the Lord, and made him long for a pure and holy life.

When he was not yet eighteen years old, Kyriakos was deeply moved during a Church Service by the words of the Gospel: “If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me” (Matthew 16:24). He believed that these words applied to him, so he went straight to the harbor without stopping at home, got onto a ship, and went to Jerusalem.

After visiting the holy places, Kyriakos lived for several months at a monastery not far from Sion, in obedience to the Igoumen Abba Eustorgios (Eustórgios). Later, with the latter's blessing, he made his way to the wilderness Lavra of Saint Euthymios the Great (January 20). Saint Euthymios, discerning great gifts of God in Kyriakos, tonsured him into the monastic schema and placed him under the guidance of Saint Gerasimos (Gerásimos) (March 4), who trained him in asceticism at the Monastery of Saint Theoktistos (Theóktistos) by the Jordan.
