Inside our Community Meals

Our Community Meals at Govan Community Project are all about bringing people from absolutely everywhere together to play, connect, and share incredible food. We simply couldn't serve up these amazing days without our passionate kitchen team—and today, we are celebrating one of our longest-standing community champions!

Meet Hawa | From Group Member to Volunteer Chef

Hawa’s journey with GCP spans an incredible 14 years. She was one of the very first members of our Women’s Group back in 2012, accessed our ESOL classes, and raised her five children alongside our Homework Club. In Autumn 2024, she decided to bring her love for cooking into the kitchen to volunteer.

"I love to help and I enjoy cooking for others. It’s important for me to volunteer because I feel good when I help the community and we all come together for the day. It brings me joy every time I work with all the other volunteers in the kitchen and work alongside Ella."

For Hawa, cooking for over 80 people has opened up an exciting world of teamwork and cultural exchange:

"Although I love cooking for my family, I had never experienced cooking with a big group of people making food and it's very exciting! We have a nice time cooking together, getting to know each other more, and learning to cook dishes from other countries."

Hawa's only note for improvement? She wishes the community meals could last even longer because they are just so fantastic!

WANT TO SHARE A LOVE OF FOOD?
Whether you want to gain group-work experience, swap global recipes like Hawa, or simply help bring people together over a great meal, we need you on the team. You don't need to be a professional chef, just bring your appetite for making a local difference!

Inside our Women’s Group

Our Women’s Group at Govan Community Project is a vibrant sanctuary focused on wellbeing, empowerment, and using creativity as a tool to bring people together. We are incredibly lucky to have passionate volunteers like Ingrid and Priscilla, who help make this space a warm, supportive refuge for women from all over the world.

Meet Ingrid | Fostering Connection & Creativity
After moving to Glasgow, Ingrid wanted a way to build community and put her passion for women’s wellbeing and creative therapy into action.

"Especially now, when the world feels so divided, spaces where people feel safe, welcomed, and valued matter more than ever."

Volunteering has also given Ingrid a platform to facilitate creative sessions, build cross-cultural communication skills, and step into leadership roles, while learning new things herself, from crocheting to self-defence!

Meet Priscilla | Finding a Place to Belong
Following a challenging period for her mental health, Priscilla saw a GCP social media post stating that trans women were safe and welcome in our spaces. It gave her the courage to step forward.

"You welcomed me with open arms. As a trans woman, volunteering has been a way of keeping myself mentally stable and feeling worthy. I bring creative ideas like cross-stitch and Carnival masks, and the women are so welcoming. I leave every week feeling 'light' and happy."

Priscilla beautifully describes her shifts as feeling like "traveling the world" surrounded by great women, adding a beautiful Brazilian proverb to describe the experience: “A bit of perfume always stays on the hands of those who give flowers.”

WANT TO EMPOWER OTHERS?
Whether you want to share creative skills like Ingrid or find a powerful sense of community and purpose like Priscilla, we want you on our team. If you want to help create safe spaces where women can connect and feel valued, join us!

Inside our Men’s Group

At Govan Community Project, our Men’s Group is all about creating a relaxed, pressure-free space where locals, refugees, and asylum seekers can hang out, play games, and share a laugh together. We are incredibly grateful for volunteers like Michael, who ensure everyone who walks through our doors receives a warm welcome.

Meet Michael | Men’s Group Volunteer

Michael stepped up to volunteer because he wanted to counter negative political rhetoric with real, localized kindness.

"I wanted to be a friendly and welcoming face for people arriving in a new home during an uncertain time in their lives. Volunteering lets me get to know people as individuals, rather than just seeing them discussed as statistics or political issues in the news."

For Michael, the project has become a vital source of connection and a massive boost for his own wellbeing:

"Volunteering with the Men’s Group has had a really positive impact on my mental health. It’s a very relaxed environment where people can talk openly, have a laugh, and spend time together without pressure. It’s genuinely rewarding, and I always leave feeling really positive."

WANT TO BUILD CONNECTIONS?

If you want to improve your communication skills, meet great people from all over the world, and play a direct part in building an inclusive community that needs kindness, support, and inclusion now more than ever, we want you on the team.

Inside our Homework Club

At Govan Community Project, our Homework Club is all about breaking down language barriers, promoting equal access to education, and creating a safe space where local children can thrive. We simply couldn't do it without our incredible volunteers, like Emma and Samhar, who show up every week to make a massive impact.

Emma | Psychology Student & Govan Local
Emma joined us to support a cause right on her doorstep. For her, volunteering became the ultimate mood-booster. "When I felt stressed with uni, Homework Club was a welcome break. Getting greeted with hugs and smiles from the kids makes it so worthwhile. It gives me a real sense of purpose and belonging."

Samhar | Former Student turned Volunteer
Samhar arrived in Glasgow from Sudan in 2016 with very little English and first came to the club for 1-on-1 support. Now, she is the one giving back. "I know exactly how it feels when English isn't your first language. Volunteering gives me the motivation to help these children make their lives better. Homework Club feels like home, it makes me proud."

WANT TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE?
If you love working with kids and want to help build a more welcoming, inclusive Govan, we’d love to have you on the team.

It’s 's Mental Health Awareness Week (May 11–17), and this year’s theme is all about Taking Action.

At Govan Community Project, we believe mental health support shouldn't just be a once-a-year conversation, it’s something to be nurtured every single day.

To help us put this into practice, our incredible Mental Health Advisor, Valérie, has shared 5 actionable tips you can use to support your wellbeing today, tomorrow, and beyond.

Action.

A word synonymous with doing, moving, and achieving, it is often associated with "going it alone." It has also been chosen as this year’s theme for Mental Health Awareness Week.

As an organisation building hope, we are collectively taking action by supporting our community members. We provide one-to-one mental health support, as well as Men’s and Women’s community groups, to help people feel connected to and supported by each other.

Our Mental Health Support Worker, Valérie, who has been working with Govan Community Project for the last year, says:

"Action isn’t always about big steps and bold moves; it’s about the little things we can do each day to make ourselves and others feel safer and supported".

What things are you doing to take action and support your own, and others', mental health?
