Renowned Azerbaijani composer Tofiq Bakikhanov has died at the age of 96, leaving behind an extraordinary musical legacy.

Over a career spanning decades, Bakikhanov composed 3 ballets, 3 musical comedies, 25 concertos, 20 sonatas, 5 symphonic mughams, 8 symphonies and 6 symphonic poems, alongside numerous chamber works and more than 100 songs and romances.

Tofigakhanim Qasimova, better known as Nurani, one of post-independence Azerbaijan’s most prominent journalists, passed away yesterday at the age of 56 after a battle with cancer.

Known for her sharp and analytical approach, she became a distinctive voice on Azerbaijan’s socio-political landscape.

Qasimova was laid to rest at Yasamal Cemetery.

Azerbaijan has filed a lawsuit against CNN in a U.S. federal court over a CNN article claiming that Azerbaijani territory was used by Israel for military and intelligence operations against Iran.

The Republic of Azerbaijan sued CNN for defamation Tuesday, saying the network put the country in Iran’s crosshairs by falsely reporting it had allowed Israel to stage military operations from its territory.

A square in central Baku has been named after Ukrainian poet and writer Taras Shevchenko. A monument to Shevchenko has stood in the square since 2008.

On Sunday, at the closing ceremony of the 42nd World Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships in Frankfurt, the championship flag was handed over to representatives of Azerbaijan.

An investigation is underway into a tragedy at the Sea Breeze entertainment complex in Baku.

A four-year-old child died in a swimming pool after his leg became trapped in a water pump. The rescue and ambulance teams that arrived at the scene were unable to save the child.

Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan have completed a key stage of the Trans-Caspian fiber-optic cable project across the Caspian Sea.

The undersea cable linking Sumgayit and Aktau has reached Kazakhstan’s coast and is now being connected to onshore infrastructure. According to Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Digital Development, the new link will connect the two countries’ digital infrastructure and create a direct high-speed data route between Asia and Europe, improving the reliability of international communications.

Samir Rzayev, president of Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), and Belgian Ambassador Julien de Fraipont discussed the development potential of Azerbaijan’s regional airports and plans to launch direct Baku-Brussels-Baku flights from May 2027.

They also discussed the expansion of AZAL’s fleet with next-generation aircraft and broader travel options for passengers following the arrival of around 40 foreign airlines in Azerbaijan.
