The Power of Connection

Sometimes the most powerful outcomes of recovery work can’t be measured in numbers.
At The Second Chance Project, two men at very different stages of their recovery journey met.

One had been in and out of recovery for many years. Although he continued to come through the door, he had become increasingly closed off. He struggled to enjoy recovery and found it difficult to see what it could offer him. His confidence and self-esteem were low.

The other was new to recovery - enthusiastic, open-minded and willing to listen, learn and try new things that might help him move forward.

They became friends.

Something changed.

The man with years of experience was able to share his knowledge, while the newer member brought enthusiasm, optimism and a willingness to try something different. Over time, the first man became more open to recovery and began to enjoy being part of the community.

His confidence grew, and he started to see himself not just as someone receiving support, but as someone who had something to offer.

Now, the two of them volunteer within their local recovery community and are working together to establish a new recovery meeting.

A friendship that may never have happened without the environment created at SCP has helped both men move forward.

This is what we mean when we talk about recovery at The Second Chance Project.
It’s not just about appointments, programmes or paperwork.
It’s about people.

It’s about connection, belonging, hope and discovering that you have something to offer.
Sometimes the outcome that matters most isn’t something that can be recorded on an outcomes form.

Sometimes it’s simply two people finding each other - and changing each other’s lives. ❤️

Scotland’s drug deaths are rising again.

The latest figures show that 1,133 people died from drug use in Scotland in 2025 — an 11% increase on the previous year.

Behind every statistic is a person, a family and a community.

At The Second Chance Project, we believe preventing drug-related deaths means more than keeping someone alive today. It also means giving people the opportunity to move towards a life beyond addiction.

Our recovery programme supports people to make lasting changes and work towards their own goals.

For our service users, that means abstinence from drugs and alcohol and rebuilding relationships, securing a safe and stable home, improving health, completing criminal justice requirements, returning to education, volunteering or moving into employment.

Recovery can provide an exit route from addiction - but people need the opportunity, support and time to make that journey.

We see every day that change is possible.

People who once felt trapped by addiction can go on to build stable lives, reconnect with their families, contribute to their communities and find purpose through volunteering, education and employment.
Keeping people alive matters. Helping people build a life beyond addiction matters too.

That is why recovery services matter. ❤️
