Zakat al-Fitr (£5 per person) is an important part of Ramadan and a key charity given for the love of Allah (SWT). It must be given before Eid prayer in the form of what is considered as staple food in the community.

“The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordained Zakat ul Fitr to purify the fasting person from indecent words or actions, and to provide food for the needy. It is accepted as Zakat for the person who gives it before the Eid prayer; but it is a mere Sadaqah for the one who gives it after the prayer.” [Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah]

Today is Islamic Relief's Foundation Day! On this day, 42 years ago, a group of medical doctors and activists in Birmingham responded to the devastating famine in Sudan by establishing what would become one of the world's largest independent Muslim humanitarian charity.

From that small office raising £100,000 in 1984, we have grown to reach more than 145 million people across 40 countries. This remarkable journey has been made possible by the dedication of our early founders, all the staff and volunteers who played pivotal roles along the way (many of whom are connected with me here), the generosity of our donors, and the trust of the communities we serve and above all the mercy of Allah.

To mark this special milestone, we've published 42 facts about Islamic Relief on our website – a fascinating collection of stories, achievements and milestones from our journey. From our first ever donation (20p from a 9-year-old boy in Cairo) to our pioneering work in conflict zones, these facts capture the breadth and impact of our work over four decades.

Recently, 38 challengers embarked on an epic journey – cycling over 300 miles from Makkah to Medina, all while raising vital funds for our Emergency Palestine Appeal. Alhamdulillah. 🌍💪

The journey through the sacred land of Saudi Arabia was filled with spiritual reminders and moments of reflection towards our ultimate purpose in life.
