Mearns School Project Presentation

At our recent meeting, Miss Hunter and Mr Duncan from the Mearns Primary School delivered an excellent presentation highlighting Mearns Primary’s 150th anniversary celebrations and sharing updates on the school’s achievements. The school will host a special celebratory day and assembly to mark the milestone, to which our club has been invited.

They outlined plans for a mosaic project, where the school is seeking Rotary’s assistance. This will be discussed further within the club to determine how best we can support. A potential collaboration on Rotakids was also raised, opening the door for future partnership between the Rotary club of Eastwood and the school.

The presentation was warmly received, and the club looks forward to exploring meaningful ways to contribute to the celebrations and strengthen ties with Mearns Primary.

Joanna George from Toastmasters visiting Eastwood Rotary.

At this week’s meeting, we were delighted to welcome Joanna George from Toastmasters International, who joined us to share an insightful overview of what Toastmasters is all about. Joanna spoke passionately about the organisation’s mission, its approach to developing confident communicators and leaders, and the impact it has on individuals and communities.

What made the session particularly valuable for the Rotary Club of Eastwood was the open and honest discussion that followed. Together, we explored the striking similarities between Rotary and Toastmasters, especially around the challenges of membership intake, engagement, and long-term retention. It was refreshing to hear how both organisations—despite having different formats and traditions—face comparable issues as volunteer-driven, community-focused groups.

The conversation quickly evolved into a collaborative exchange of ideas. Members from across the club contributed thoughts on:

How Rotary and Toastmasters can learn from each other’s strengths

Opportunities for joint initiatives that showcase both organisations

Ways to enhance the member experience from the moment someone walks through the door

How we can create a more engaging, modern, and supportive environment for prospective and current members

The energy in the room was fantastic. Everyone was engaged, curious, and eager to explore new possibilities. It was exactly the kind of open-minded, forward-looking dialogue that strengthens our club culture.

We are grateful to Joanna for taking the time to visit us and for sparking such a meaningful conversation. A great evening all round, and a reminder of how much we can achieve when we share ideas across organisations with a common purpose—developing people and serving our community.

Rotary Golf Tournament – The Wylkedin Quaich

The annual Wylkedin Quaich Rotary Golf Tournament took place last month, bringing together Rotary teams from across Scotland to compete over two of Gleneagles’ iconic courses — The King’s and The Queen’s.

This prestigious event is primarily a team competition, with the best three scores from each four?ball counting towards the overall team prize. An individual award is also presented to the top?scoring player.

Craig Thomson, representing the Rotary Club of Eastwood as part of the Glasgow Area team, helped secure an impressive second?place finish. The team accepted this result with good humour — as tradition dictates, the winners (this year, Dalbeattie) take on the responsibility of organising next year’s tournament.

Craig, however, enjoyed a personal triumph. To his delight — and slight astonishment — he claimed the Individual Winner’s Trophy, scoring an excellent 40 Stableford points around the King’s Course. He returned home with the Gary Player Trophy and a well?earned bottle of whisky.

It was a superbly organised and thoroughly enjoyable day, reflecting the very best of Rotary fellowship, sportsmanship, and friendly competition.

18th Annual Primary School Quiz

Eastwood and Barrhead Rotary Clubs successfully hosted their 18th Annual Primary Schools Quiz Competition on 21 April at St Cadoc’s Primary School.
The event was a resounding success, bringing together 18 primary schools from across East Renfrewshire for an afternoon of high‑energy competition and impressive teamwork.

With scores edging closer round after round, two outstanding teams ultimately emerged as clear winners.

Kirkhill Primary School — represented by Woody Melville, Aisha Shafiq, Evelyn Cooper and Ramsay Menzies — claimed the Eastwood Trophy.

St John’s Primary School — represented by Aidan Fallon, Ethan Cunningham, Logan Melville and Luca Capaldi — secured the Barrhead Trophy.

The standard of competition was exceptionally high, with pupils demonstrating quick thinking, strong collaboration, and remarkable knowledge as they tackled a challenging set of questions delivered by Quiz Master Rtn. Peter Daniels.

Parents and teachers from participating schools attended in strong numbers, adding to the atmosphere and celebrating the achievements of all the young competitors.
