Across Britain far too many households face unaffordable energy costs. It is time for change.

Energy price rise kicks in today alongside a 6month reduction in VAT on electricity. 60% of households are immediately affected as they are on the price cap whilst 40% already have fixed deals. Gas prices have risen over 30% in the last 6mnths and electricity continues to be an unaffordable way to heat homes for far too many.

What can you do? Read your meter if you need to provide manual meter readings, don't risk overpayment. Consider a fixed deal if you can afford it. If you are in debt, get help, don't ignore it. Speak to your energy supplier and/or get help from brilliant people at Citizens Advice Bureaus, specialist advice orgs, Home Energy Scotland or Advice Direct Scotland.

We need to see government intervention this winter. Prices are rising fast and the cost of doing nothing will be, rising debt, people going without, public health declines and sadly for some with underlying health conditions it will unnecessarily hasten their deaths. Cold damp homes can be avoided, it is about political priorities and choices. Fuel Poverty kills.

That's why Energy Action Scotland is proud to be delivering a new project, developed in consultation with Scottish Confederation Of Park Home Residents Associations - SCOPHRA, to support people living in full-time residential park homes across Scotland.

Through this project, residents can access a free telephone appointment with a qualified energy adviser who can provide support with:

✅ Ways to improve energy efficiency at home
✅ Benefits and income maximisation support
✅ Access to grants, schemes and additional assistance
✅ Opportunity for free SMART heating controls installation (subject to eligibility criteria)

Energy Action Scotland was delighted to attend SGN's Regional Awareness Event, which brought together members of the Safe and Warm Partnership network from across Central and West Scotland at the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service Headquarters in Cambuslang.

The event provided a valuable opportunity to connect with partner organisations, share knowledge, and discuss how we can work together to support vulnerable households and improve safety within our communities.

The Scottish Government has established a working group and four sub-groups to improve energy advice to consumers on low incomes and in vulnerable circumstances.

The ‘proactive help’ sub-group, co-chaired by Octopus Energy and Sustainability First and includes Energy Action Scotland, is carrying out a survey to gather evidence on how suppliers can provide proactive support to consumers facing potential crises.

We want to hear from advice and consumer organisations about their experiences of current supplier practice and their thoughts on potential improvements.

The survey parallels a similar exercise carried out with specialist teams within Octopus Energy.
