Better Than Zero

Better Than Zero We are Betterthanzero - We take action against Scotland's worst bosses to end poverty pay and zero hours contracts.

Better than Zero is the nationwide campaign against poverty pay and zero hours contracts. We take action against Scotland's most exploitative bosses in order to improve working conditions. We equip our activists with the legal knowledge and organising skills to change their workplaces from within. Launched in 2015 by the Scottish Trades Union Congress, the Better than Zero campaign “takes on the issue of insecure work”, especially in the case of young people entering work.

Not only have BrewDog ditched their commitment to pay workers a Real Living Wage during a cost-of-living crisis, they’re also spinning this real-terms pay cut as an ‘increase’.

What they actually mean is that workers will only be paid the legal minimum wage.

A new study by the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has laid bare the plight of young workers in the UK, with precarity and poverty pay being shockingly prevalent.

We want to hear from young workers about how this affects their lives, and we're here to help if you want to push for better terms at work.

New research by ACAS has found that three in five workers are unaware of the rights of people on zero hours’ contracts. Only one in ten were found to be ‘fully aware’ of these rights.

Far too often, we hear from workers whose employers are avoiding their obligations on wages, holiday pay, and other basic rights. Many zero-hours workers don’t even receive their employment terms in writing, meaning their bosses can just make up terms on the fly.

If you’re on a zero-hours contract and are unsure of your rights, or if you’re concerned your employer isn’t meeting their obligations, we want to hear from you.

The increase in the minimum wage is a response to immense pressure from workers and unions throughout the cost-of-living crisis, and doesn’t go far enough.

£11.44 is still below a real living wage - which, it’s worth remembering, is the bare minimum of what workers need to live on.

We also desperately need wage increases to be combined with strengthened rights and protections for all workers, including an end to zero-hours contracts and other exploitative practices.

The government are panicking, and are tossing scraps. We need to keep pushing.

In a major setback for the struggle against exploitation in the gig economy, the UK Supreme Court has ruled that Deliveroo riders are not employees.

More than ever, we desperately need strengthened employment laws which extend rights and protections to all workers, including those in bogus self-employment like Deliveroo riders.

Workers in Scotland and across the world have shown incredible resilience and determination in this fight, and this judgement won’t stop them.

More and more bosses are forcing their workers to register as self-employed in order to avoid their obligations as employers.

The result is an impoverished, vulnerable, exploited workforce.
