πŸ“£ SaltSpace is delighted to announce "TUN" – an exhibition by Rosie Aspinall Priest.

πŸ“† Opening event: Fri 12th June, 5:00-7:00pm
πŸ“† Continues on: Sat 13th and Sun 14th June, 11:00am-4:00pm

πŸ“ SaltSpace Gallery: 38 Albert Road, Glasgow, G42 8DN

EXHIBITION STATEMENT:
TUN explores the strange, resilient life of the tardigrade, a microscopic creature capable of surviving extreme conditions, including the vacuum of space. Through large-scale sculpture and sound, the exhibition transforms this almost invisible being into something monumental, celebratory, and immersive. Drawing on conversations with children, the work reimagines tardigrades not as scientific subjects, but as beings with homes, feelings, and relationships to the cosmos.

Part of The Space Celebration Organisation, the exhibition proposes a q***r, non-extractive relationship with space - one rooted in care, curiosity, and joy rather than conquest. TUN invites us to consider what it means to endure, to belong, and to remain soft within an expansive and uncertain universe.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
Rosie Aspinall Priest is a q***r, neurodivergent and interdisciplinary artist, researcher, and writer based in Musselburgh. They hold a PhD in the sociology of art, specialising in collaborative and participatory practices. Their work spans sculpture, performance, sound, and text, often exploring q***rness, joy, and collective imagination. Recent projects include Shrine to the Starborn, which received the Contemporary Art Prize at Leith School of Art (2025), and The Space Celebration Organisation, an ongoing body of work reimagining our relationship with the cosmos.

πŸ“£ SaltSpace is delighted to announce "The View from Here - Paintings from the South Texas Borderlands" – an exhibition by Gina Gwen Palacios.

πŸ“† Opening event: Tues, June 9th, 5–8pm
πŸ“† Continues on: Wed, June 10th - 2-8pm

πŸ“ SaltSpace Gallery: 38 Albert Road, Glasgow, G42 8DN

EXHIBITION STATEMENT:
Drawing from roadside observations and personal experiences moving through the South Texas borderlands along the U.S.–Mexico border, The View from Here presents a series of expressive landscape paintings that reflect on place, memory, atmosphere, and cultural identity. Created from photographs taken while walking through the region, the works focus on ordinary and often overlooked spaces. Rather than documenting the landscape directly, the paintings approach the borderlands as an emotional and psychological space where memory, labor, family history, and environment intersect. Through loose gestures, saturated color, and shifting visibility, the works consider how the landscape holds traces of the people and histories connected to it, offering a personal view of a culturally rich region often flattened by political narratives and media imagery.

ARTIST STATEMENT:
Gina Gwen Palacios is a Texas-based artist whose work explores landscape, memory, and cultural identity within the South Texas borderlands along the U.S. – Mexico border. Drawing from her experiences exploring the landscape of the region, she creates paintings that reflect the relationship between place, people, and history. Her practice highlights overlooked geographic and cultural narratives through expressive landscapes and personal imagery rooted in family archives and roadside observations. Palacios recently completed the Mellon-RESI LatinTX Artist-in-Residence program at Texas A&M University, where she presented the solo exhibition Lone Star Horizon, and she currently serves as Associate Professor and Director of the Center of the Borderlands at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

ARTIST BIO:
Andrew Sutherland is a textile artist, costume designer, and filmmaker from Shetland. Having studied textile design at Glasgow School of Art and graduating in 2018, he developed a practice combining machine knitting, crochet, tufting, and mixed media to create surreal characters, worlds, and collaborative film that balanced humour and innocence with something more unsettling.
Andrew has created costumes for musicians, club nights, and film, and his work has appeared in publications including Hunger, Checkout, and Sicky. More recent work has shifted towards functional and immersive textile objects, using illustrated textile surfaces and light to explore ideas of comfort, fantasy, and the everyday.

πŸ“£πŸ“£ Announcing the SaltSpace X GSA Graduate Residency Award 2026!! πŸ“£πŸ“£

🌟🌟 For the fifth year in a row, we are delighted to offer this award to celebrate and nurture the creative endeavours and artistic merit, and innovation of a graduate from the School of Fine Art graduating class of 2026! 🌟🌟

Twelve artists will be shortlisted and awarded one year’s free graduate membership with SaltSpace Cooperative, and all twelve artists will be invited to submit a proposal to be considered for the Graduate Award.

From the shortlist, one artist will be awarded the SaltSpace X GSA Graduate Award 2026.
The awarded artist will receive:

πŸ”ΉA six-week studio-based residency in our Albert Road Gallery (We aim for the artist residency to begin in early December 2026).
πŸ”ΉA one-week solo show in our SaltSpace gallery at 38 Albert Road, Glasgow, G42 8DN
πŸ”ΉTwo tutorial meetings with SaltSpace committee members
πŸ”ΉPlus marketing support and a social media takeover during the residency period.

One of the key aims of this award is to nurture creativity in Glasgow, and provide an opportunity for a recent graduate to stay in the city, develop a body of work post-graduation, and begin to develop key skills to sustain their practice after college.

We're so excited to be running this award again this year, and thank you to the Glasgow School of Art Creative Network for funding the SaltSpace X GSA Graduate Award. πŸ’™

πŸ“£ SaltSpace is delighted to announce "Love Hotel" – an exhibition by Ellie Home and Freya Patterson.

πŸ“† Opening: Tues 2nd June, 6-9pm
πŸ“† Continues: Wed 3rd and Thurs 4th, 2-7pm

πŸ“ SaltSpace Gallery: 38 Albert Road, Glasgow, G42 8DN

EXHIBITION STATEMENT:
The Love Hotel is our architectural body, within its sinewy walls strange encounters occur, dirt and the divine in jittering minglement.

Within this space we explore the double-edged sword of interconnection. On one hand it's comforting to think of yourself as part of an ongoing cycle of cosmic renewal.

The other hand’s wounds leak out in a festering dance. The borders of our membranes are easily devoured and permeable, beckoning in mutation. We have a plethora of polyamorous parasitical lovers festering under our skin.

Through collecting and enveloping natural forms in patterns, symbols and beasts of our fantasy landscapes we aim to explore these porous borders and strange meetings. Our fantastical creatures will contaminate each other's mythologies. And willingly so.

I was born and brought up in London. I came to Glasgow in my early marriage and studied Psychology (PhD). I studied art in the evenings and went to GSA Art School (Environmental Art). My final exhibition showed anxiety related to creativity in β€˜Dreams and Wishes’ 2003. In 2003 I studied Community Arts and became a single parent with two teenagers. I moved to jobs in Community Care and Community Learning classes in painting and ceramic sculpture. In sculpture 2014 I reminisced on the Tenniel pictures and poetry of Alice in Wonderland. (East Kilbride Art Centre with Christine Kabashi β€˜Scotland through the Looking Glass’ March 2020) . I joined the Ceramic Studio at WASPS in 2022. (WASPS Exhibition, House of an Art Lover). In my painting with the help of artist Jane Shanks challenging me. I found my own practice, new ways of depicting mood and the environment in light and colour.

After Art School I reverted to confused and amateur paintings like my emotional thinking. On a bad day, I would plunge my painting in the Loch Lomond in frustration. Too dry, nothing happened, too wet, nothing much left. Then light rain fell on my wet paint, beautiful; I bungled it tried to finish quickly and lost the effects. I put wet paintings out into the rain needed soft gentle rain! The breakthrough years later: free of child and elderly care, and with new partner; happier and more confident. Challenged to paint abstractly, using canvas where I had accidentally created thin water textures and put thin layers on top. The pictures that followed used acrylic washes, dripping paint and dropping am splashing paint and pouring water onto paint. These created organic like effects on the surfaces. With the water I move the colours and merge the colours to create new images. I could build up these layers. Water, reflection and the Aurora became favourite subjects.
