The outrageous treatment of hospitality workers has hit the headlines again today. From giants like failing to pay the minimum wage to 3,699 workers to over 1million workers having their shifts cancelled at the last minute losing upto £500 per month.

New rights under the ERA are welcome, but legislation sets the floor, not the ceiling. Some of the best agreements we’ve negotiated in hospitality already give workers decent wages and stronger protections. Ultimately, the best way to improve pay and stop one-sided flexibility is for workers to organise collectively through a union so that they can negotiate their own wages, rotas, minimum hours contracts and cancellation arrangements with their employer.
