On 2nd June, I was pleased to attend the Glasgow Partners Conference, Building Resilience: Communities, Cohesion and Shared Responsibility.

The conference featured valuable contributions from a range of inspiring speakers, including Councillor Susan Aitken, Leader of Glasgow City Council; Professor Mona Siddiqui, whose keynote address, "Fractures and Futures: Navigating the Challenges of Social Cohesion", provided thought-provoking insights; Lucien Staddon Foster from the Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights (CRER) on "Tackling Online Hate and Extremism"; Superintendent Nigel Thacker of Police Scotland on "Policing Protests and Community Safety"; Professor Naomi Head from the Centre for Good Relations on "Building Pathways to Good Relations in Divided Communities"; and Cormac Quinn, Policy Manager at Glasgow City Council's Chief Executive's Office, who provided an important Community Cohesion Update.

The event concluded with a roundtable Q&A session, offering participants the opportunity to explore a variety of concerns, ideas, and recommendations that were addressed to the Hate Crime Working Group.

It was an inspiring and informative day, filled with rich discussions on social cohesion, community safety, resilience, and our shared responsibility in building stronger and more inclusive communities.

A massive thank you to all the speakers and to the facilitators, Andy Sirel from JustRight Scotland and Shaheen Baber, for the invitation and for delivering such a productive event.

I was delighted to represent Najwa New Scots Carers Centre (SCIO) and to contribute to these important conversations that help shape stronger, safer, and more connected communities.

On Friday 29th May, it was a pleasure to meet and connect with Karina, Project Worker for Community Engagement & Lived Experience at the Homeward Aberdeen Programme, Grampian Regional Equality Council (GREC), alongside her colleague Abhail, Policy Officer.

I had the privilege of participating in the Scottish Refugee Council's New Scots Lived Experience Focus Group, where we engaged with a wonderful group of participants to reflect on the achievements, gaps, and future priorities of the New Scots Strategy. The session highlighted the importance of understanding what helps people feel welcomed, included, and empowered within their communities, while recognising participants not only as service users but as valuable community members whose knowledge, experience, and expertise can help shape future policy and practice.

The day was followed by a dinner meeting, which provided an excellent opportunity for me, as CEO and Founder of Najwa New Scots Carers Centre (SCIO), to explore potential collaboration opportunities with Grampian Regional Equality Council (GREC). We also discussed future events and initiatives that could benefit communities in both Glasgow and Aberdeen.

Of course, we couldn't miss the chance to enjoy some sightseeing in the beautiful city of Aberdeen—my first visit there, and certainly not my last!

A massive thank you to the Scottish Refugee Council and the fabulous team for creating such a meaningful opportunity. I look forward to building productive partnerships and fostering mutual collaboration in the future.

Today at our Coffee Morning hub, we hosted a Beauty Therapy session where ladies from our community group benefited from complimentary massages.

One lady shared how much this project has meant to her. After losing her son, she felt unable to grieve or process her loss. She told us that coming to our hub finally gave her a safe and welcoming space where she could mourn without judgement. While enjoying a complimentary massage, she found a moment to relax, reflect, and support her mental wellbeing. She asked that this project continues, saying that spaces like this are truly needed for people facing difficult times.

It was overwhelming and moving to see how differently ladies use our hub. It is not always a place of joy and laughter — sometimes it is a place to share pain, struggles, and difficult experiences, and simply have someone who will listen.

Our Coffee Morning also welcomed ladies from the Maryhill neighbourhood who joined us for a cup of tea and conversation, even if they had never met before. Creating connections and reducing isolation remains at the heart of what we do.

One question keeps being asked: who supports this project?

A massive thank you to The National Lottery Community Fund and EMDF CEMVO Scotland for making this project possible and accessible — providing women with a free, welcoming space where they can talk, connect, and share concerns, whether happy or sad. Your support is making a real difference in our community. 💜
Note: today's photos weren't shared respectively to the clients request.

A book unlike any other.

I was honoured to attend the launch of Naz Shah MP’s book, Honoured, hosted by Anum Qaisar. This powerful book highlights the critical issue of violence against women and girls, sharing the lived experiences and challenges faced by a young girl who would later become one of the leading Asian Muslim voices in politics.

The book sends a strong message of empowerment to women and girls who continue to face violence and adversity, showing how resilience and determination can inspire change.

The discussion opened with reflections from Former First Minister of Scotland Hamza Yousaf on Naz Shah’s remarkable journey, followed by valuable insights from Shaheen Baber, Hate Crime Policy Officer and former Police Superintendent, who spoke about the ongoing challenges surrounding violence and hate crime.

As CEO and Founder of Najwa New Scots Carers Centre (SCIO), this event provided a valuable opportunity for networking, collaboration, and learning from distinguished guests who shared meaningful reflections and perspectives.

Congratulations to Naz Shah MP on the launch of Honoured. Thank you to Junaid Ashraf for the invitation. I look forward to attending more impactful events and continuing to connect with individuals who are making a real difference in people’s lives.

Today, we were deeply honoured to welcome Dr. Khadija Coll MBE from the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit to Najwa New Scots Carers Centre (SCIO) Coffee Morning Hub for a powerful brainstorming and leadership meeting focused on strengthening support, guidance, and collaboration for our community.

Dr. Khadija did not come only as a professional leader offering her expertise, vision, and partnership — she came as someone whose support has personally touched my life and the lives of my children for almost six years. During one of the most vulnerable periods of my journey as a woman and mother, she stood beside us with compassion, wisdom, and encouragement. My children, who were once young boys receiving her support, are now grown men serving the community and striving to give back with the same spirit of care and responsibility they learned through people like her.

As a specialist Project Manager at Police Scotland, Dr. Khadija’s long experience, leadership, and dedication to challenging hate crime, supporting women and girls, and protecting vulnerable members of our communities are a true asset for us at Najwa NSCC and for the wider Maryhill community.

Some people lead through titles, but others lead through humanity, integrity, and lasting impact. Dr. Khadija Coll MBE is one of those rare people. We are grateful for her continued support, guidance, and belief in our work and our community.

Looking forward to a long mutual collaboration with the Scottish Violence Reduction Unit.
