This Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating the impact volunteers make through our Connections Programme.

By giving their time, guidance, and encouragement, volunteers help young people build confidence and make informed decisions about their future — while also gaining valuable skills and a sense of fulfillment themselves.

94% of Scottish volunteers say enjoyment is the biggest benefit of volunteering, while 92% feel they’ve made a positive difference – Info from VVolunteer Scotland

We asked one of our young people 'What has it been like to have a mentor?"

After losing his job, this young person continued to meet with his mentor regularly, receiving support and encouragement that helped him to rebuild his confidence and look for new opportunities.

Two years later, he is now in his second year of studying mechanics at college, has 100% attendance, works part-time in construction, and has supported Working Rite's Youth Committee.

This Volunteers’ Week, we’re celebrating the life-changing impact of mentoring relationships.

Today marks the start of Pride Month, a time to celebrate LGBTQ+ identities, visibility, and the ongoing journey towards equality.

We’re committed to creating a safe, inclusive, and respectful environment for both our staff and the young people we support, and to making changes that have a real and lasting impact. Support young people to make a Change That Works!

Working Rite is continuing to welcome volunteer applications for our Connections Mentoring programme in East Ayrshire and Glasgow.

This is an opportunity to support young people who have completed our Choices and/or Chances programmes as they work towards their goals and take steps into the world of work.

You don’t need any prior mentoring experience, full training is provided. Volunteers are matched with a young person for up to a year, helping them build on the progress they’ve already made and supporting them as they move into adult life.

To apply, please contact us at [email protected].

International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia

Every young person deserves to feel safe, supported, and able to be themselves as they take their next steps into work.

At Working Rite, we know how much a positive workplace can impact the confidence and wellbeing of our young people and staff. Feeling respected and included helps young people settle in, build relationships, and grow in confidence.

As we continue developing inclusive practices through our work alongside LGBT Youth Scotland’s Bronze Charter Journey, we are committed to creating supportive environments where every person feels they belong.

Today, we stand with LGBTQ+ people and continue to champion safe, respectful workplaces for everyone.

A brilliant day of learning, exploring, and gaining workplace insight.
A huge thank you to the Sustainability Team at the Aberdeen Group plc offices in Edinburgh for welcoming some of our trainees, Lilly, Sophie, Carly, and one of our Edinburgh Project Coordinators, Leanne.

The day included an introduction from the Sustainability Team, a session on colleague communications, insights into HR roles and experiences, a guided office tour, discussions around different roles, and a final catch-up and round-up.

It was a great opportunity to see the variety of roles within a workplace and learn more about different career paths.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to speak with the group and share their experiences. Visits like this give our Choices groups valuable insight into the world of work and future opportunities.

Allie joined the Pathfinder programme in partnership with DRC Youth Project - SCIO after leaving school at 15, with a clear interest in working in childcare. She showed strong potential early on but wasn’t quite ready to move straight into a full-time placement.

With support from her Project Coordinator, Dougie, a more gradual plan was put in place. Allie began a voluntary placement with an after-school care service, giving her the chance to build confidence and gain experience at a steady pace.

Over 10 weeks, she made great progress, developing practical skills like preparing activities, supporting children, and helping manage behaviour, while also building key employability skills including teamwork, communication, reliability, and timekeeping. During this time, she was also managing some personal challenges, but with regular support, she stayed focused and committed.

Although the placement didn’t lead directly to a job, it was an important step forward. It helped Allie grow in confidence, gain real experience, and better understand her strengths and next steps.

Around nine months after joining the programme, Allie secured a place at college to study childcare, alongside a part-time role at a children’s adventure play centre, allowing her to continue building experience while studying.

Her journey is a clear example of Change that works in practice.

Good job Jamie!

Jamie, who has come through the Chances phase of our programme (Pathfinder), delivered in partnership with DRC Youth Project - SCIO has now completed his Week 7 progress review with his mentor Fraser at Mark1 Mot Centre in Anniesland.

Progress has been steady and, with supervision, Jamie is continuing to build his skills in the garage – learning how to change brakes, carry out services, and understand the day-to-day pace of a busy workshop.

Fraser has been a great support, taking the time to show Jamie the ropes and help build his confidence at this early stage.

Keep up the good work.
