TWO WEEKS TO GO - COVERT FOOTAGE PROVES A STRONGER DETERRENT IS NEEDED.

With two weeks to go before the consultation into strengthening the Hunting Act ends the HSA has obtained new footage which perfectly illustrates the need for a stronger deterrent to hunting wild mammals with dogs.

Covert cameras captured Grove & Rufford huntsman, Jacob Whalley, and terrierman Ste Reynolds interfering with an active badger sett prior to a cubbing meet last season. The 2025/26 season was Jacob Whalley’s first season as a huntsman, coming fresh from his position as whipper in at the Fitzwilliam Hunt. In July 2025, Whalley pleaded guilty to Hunting Act offences while at the Fitzwilliam.

The government must implement stronger penalties for those in breach of the Act as the current legislation is not enough of a deterrent. There cannot be any loopholes or exemptions for them to hide behind. With only two weeks left to complete the consultation it is vital that you have your say https://www.huntsabs.org.uk/two-weeks-to-go-covert-footage-proves-a-stronger-deterrent-is-needed/

'Trail hunting' does not exist and never has done. It is a smokescreen to enable hunts to continue to inflict pain and terror on our wildlife.

We have an opportunity to end it for good.

YET ANOTHER COURT APPEARANCE FOR ILLEGAL HUNTING‼

Claire Bellamy, former huntswoman of the Lauderdale Hunt, faces trial on 15th June after being charged in January 2025 with illegal hunting, under licence from NatureScot. Footage obtained by Glasgow Hunt Sabs will be central to the case. Bellamy is the third person to face trial since the Hunting with Dogs (Scotland) Act came into force in October 2023.

The fox hunting was carried out on our old territory of the Lanarkshire & Renfrewshire Hunt, which disbanded 3 years ago after their reign of 252 years of animal cruelty. These hunts, one by one, need consigned to history. A minority of our population support this barbaric activity (which has absolutely nothing to do with fox control) and it will finally stop; it's just a matter of time.

Two members of the Jed Forest Hunt are facing an incredible 6 charges under the Hunting with Dogs (Scotland) Act 2023.

Matthew Wilkinson and Trevor Adams are accused of illegally hunting foxes and breaching license rules, with Wilkinson facing multiple other alleged offences across the Scottish Borders, including one linked to illegal trail hunting.

All charges have taken place since the introduction of the Hunting with Dogs (Scotland) Act 2023.
Flouting the law at every turn. The duo are expected back in court on 30th March.

We have focused our time on this particular hunt for the past 3 seasons as we had evidence they were breaking the law and using whatever loophole they could to continue to hunt foxes for 'sport'.

JED FOREST HUNT - 28/2/26
ADDERSTON SHIELS, HAWICK

THE FINAL JEDLINE

The season’s advertised 'final' hunt meet was at Adderston Shiels and we were soon tipped off that they were travelling north. We were able to greet them as they arrived at Colifort around 11.45am. They hunted around White Hill before heading north east to Long Plantation. This was followed by an aimless loop around Whiteacres Hill, to Buckstruther Moss, where they stopped. Sabs were constantly on top of them, using our drone when needed.

The fast paced day continued south through Earlside, South Berryfell and Shankend where they took the route back to their horse boxes near Stobs Castle. We can't say for sure that no fox was killed as quads, hounds and huntsman, Matty Wilkinson were spotted in an area where no drag had been laid and hounds were heard in cry.

Mostly an uneventful day but Hayden Reith provided a bit of entertainment by getting his quad stuck at Adderston Lee Moss. For a moment we thought he was going to go up in a puff of smoke and wreck his vehicle.

The Jed have recently been parading their effort at drag hunting, albeit a lacklustre attempt. Considering how blood thirsty this hunt are for a kill it will take a bit of convincing to see if the tide is truly turning but we remain to be convinced. The downside for this lot, if they continue to attempt to drag hunt, is that they will turn their keen gunmen on quads into hunt lacky gate openers. This sorry end hopefully is in store for Kieran, Hayden, Kevin, Lewis, Stuart, Henderson and any other minion. But a better one for local wildlife.

Who would have thought almost 3 years after the Hunting with Dogs (Scotland) Act 2023 came into force that sabs and monitors would continue to be needed to be keeping an eye on hunts. The current legislation certainly needs tightened as hunts such as the Jed Forest have shown numerous times that they are intent on bending the law in any which way they can.

We will be going nowhere and if you're keen to join us in the fight against this barbaric sport, please get in touch.

Thanks again to our friends Edinburgh Hunt Sabs for joining us today 🦊

THE JED FOREST HUNT - 21/2/26
KIRKLANDS, ANCRUM

TWO STEPS AHEAD

A relatively easy day of sabbing for our group and Edinburgh Hunt Sabs - we analysed maps of the area before starting the day and decided it was best to position foot sabs on Castle Hill where we had a clear view of the meet at Kirklands. At 11:50 the hunt set off with a full pack of hounds and did two loops of Ancrum Park, interrupted by various points where they all gathered and waited around, killing time. Foot sabs kept on top of the hunt and were with them as they gathered before peeling off to their scheduled lunch/drinks break.

When we were all in one place Matty became very flustered and hurled personal insults as well as a handful of biscuits at two foot sabs, clearly annoyed and riled up by our presence. Up until this point the hunt did seem to have been attempting to drag hunt with the full pack, but it begs the question: why are they so angered by our mere presence if they intend to only act legally and without killing for the full day and why are they so desperate for us to be out of the area?

We had some interesting back and forth with a rider and Matty about how sabs are supposedly going to be responsible for the death of all the hounds if hunting comes to the end as if this somehow makes us the bad guys, but “we will slaughter the hounds once they are no longer useful as tools for our hunting” isn’t the mic-drop argument that they seem to think it is.

The hunt became increasingly determined for us to leave the area and suddenly started shouting about private land. A hunt rider also asked us how much longer we were going to be around. Our suspicions were raised and, knowing which land belongs to hunt master Jamie Scott, we had a feeling that the hunt were interested in a covert on Ancrum Common. Sure enough, after observing the riders on their lunch break at the meet (and watching as one hound kept breaking away and running full pelt away from the hunt with stressed riders in tow) the sab car drove up towards Ancrum Common and found Jamie Scott and hunt support there. They were pointing out the covert from the road and seemed to be waiting for the rest of the hunt. They seemed flustered and agitated by the sab car spotting them. Foot sabs went back in to the area just as Matty and the hounds arrived . We can’t say what the hunt would have been up to if sabs hadn’t been around but under our watchful eye the field proceeded to do some jumps and generally rode around the fields, before eventually calling it a day and headed back to Ancrum West Mains to pack up at around 3:15pm.

When the hunt appear to be following a drag in earnest it is somewhat reassuring - this is obviously preferable to them actively hunting foxes - it doesn’t mean we will simply take their word for it and leave them be. No amount of expletives or tantrums from the huntsman will deter us from having boots on the ground. Until the next time 🦊
