Join us for the second of our Strange Studio Saturday Sessions, led by artist Jemimah Vaughanโœจ This Saturday, 11-4pm!

Take part in a slow paced, collaborative quilt making workshop for all ages which will explore themes of radical quilting and fibre-based art as a means of mutual aid. Across two sessions we will explore visual histories of quilts as a non-verbal way of marking history and as a tool to agitate social change. We will learn how to collectively translate our designs into one quilted artwork using patchwork, appliquรฉ and basic stitching. In solidarity with the people of Palestine, our quilt will be exhibited in the Strange Exchange Library and raffled to raise funds for the Womenโ€™s Support Center in Nablus ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ‡ธ

Jemimah Vaughan is a maker of images and objects. Her practice explores how the role of an artist relates to crafts-people and folk culture, often culminating in paintings, foraged natural dye production and quilt making. She is passionate about collaborative, community centred models of art production and the interplay of art that is both decorative and functional.

This is the second in the series of workshops focussing on process led, regenerative and collaborative ways of making, learning and coming together.๐Ÿชฑ๐Ÿ‘€

They are free, drop in, open to everyone!

See you Saturdayโœจ

Next Thursday and Friday, we welcome Shawn Nayar to Strange Field for his premier performance of The Mongrel, as part of Take Me Somewhere festival.

Shawn Nayar is a performing artist who traces q***r diasporic histories to expose the violence embedded in their colonial fractures. As these histories are tumultuous, his body of work contorts to capture them by facilitating critical discourse across intrinsic movement pieces, multimedia installations, and performance lectures.

The figure of the Mongrel emerges from British Imperial rule where the Empire, fearing the โ€œmongrelizationโ€ of the white race, isolated Anglo-Indians from both British and Indian communities. These imperial orderings bind the rippling contours of the Mongrelโ€™s body and carry mangled histories of exclusion and resistance.

This performance work navigates the contradictory narratives that emerge when tracing Anglo-Indian and mixed race histories, placing physically intense choreography within the spectacle of a ritual to confront this conflicting tale of ancestry. Live vocals entwine with abrasive choreographic arrangements, layering to erupt as violent cathartic releases - acts of radical self-care that seek to upturn and disrupt colonial legacies.
