✊ Support Glasgow Caledonian University staff fighting compulsory redundancies.

Security staff, cleaners, couriers, accommodation and registry workers are taking strike action as up to 100 jobs remain at risk.

These staff support students and keep the university running. They deserve secure jobs and a university leadership willing to work with them to protect its future.

📅 UNISON members walk out together on Thursday 1 and Thursday 15 October, with individual staff groups taking selective action between those dates.

Lecturers and support staff say the action by the UCU, the EIS and Unison on Thursday will effectively close the university.

Glasgow’s workers have fought too long for equal pay to be divided now.

The £110m identified for arrears matters. UNISON wants workers who have been historically underpaid to get the money they are owed.

But low-paid workers, including school support staff, cleaners and admin staff, should not have to pay for equal pay through substantial cuts to their own wages.

A ballot on the current proposal risks locking workers into that choice.

UNISON’s position is clear. Keep negotiating. Improve the pay structure. Reduce detriment. Protect workers facing losses. Deliver the arrears.

Once there is a deal worth balloting on, we will take it to our members. Members should have the final say on a clear proposal they have had proper time to consider.

Nearly 2,000 workers facing detriment. Some could lose thousands of pounds. And Glasgow City Council has chosen to issue dismissal letters.

UNISON welcomes the £110m for assimilation and equal pay arrears. That money is hard won and deserved.

But it does not fix the fundamental problem: workers still stand to lose out.

“We haven’t betrayed anyone. We are out fighting for our members.”

Unison Glasgow City Branch will not be bullied into accepting proposals that leave workers worse off or tie our hands in fighting them.

Others have chosen their position.

UNISON chooses to keep fighting for improvements.

Then our members will decide.

Glasgow City Council announced the move after a stalemate in talks over a new salary structure to address equal pay issues.
