Our fundraiser for a new vehicle to provide the services of the Cambulance continues. Spider Arts’ mobile art therapy studio — needs an upgrade for the fully kitted-out space that drives to schools, nurseries and communities across Scotland to bring art therapy to children and young people who couldn’t otherwise access it.
The ‘calmbulance’ is described as a safe, consistent, private space that is essential for successful therapy.
Not every school or organisation can offer the safe, private space that good therapy needs — and some families simply don’t have services nearby. The Calmbulance solves that: a calm, inviting space where kids can work through their emotions through play and art-making, and build the confidence and coping skills they need.
Referrals come from schools, GPs, partner organisations, and parents and carers directly. Demand has outstripped what the current van can offer — the old Calmbulance is tired, and the referral list continues to grow. We really need a new vehicle, fit for purpose, and shorter wait times for kids who need support now, not eventually.
Our longer term aim would be to have a second Cambulance on the road, which means we would be able to support an additional 50 to 100 families a year, which doesn’t sound a lot, but when you’ve got a young person in crisis, shutting down, becoming isolated, the longer they’re in that state, the harder it is to get them out of it.
